Saint Joseph’s Greg Kumpel and Kyle Mullen Earn All-Big Five in Baseball

Saint Joseph’s Sophomore First Baseman and Sophomore Pitcher Kyle Mullen  were named to the 2011 All-Big Five Baseball team.  Additionally, Sophomore Catcher Eddie Palmer was chosen to the All-Big Five baseball Academic Team.  The team is selected by the head coaches and sports information offices of the Big Five baseball-playing schools, while the All-Academic team is selected solely by the sports information offices.

Kumpel led the Hawks with a .384 batting average.  He earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors this season.  The Sophomore power hitter led the Hawks in hits (68, tied for sixth-most in a single season in program history), doubles (14), runs scored (31), runs batted in (32), slugging (.525), and on-base percentage (.463).  Kumpel was second on the team with 3 home runs.

Mullen posted a 6 – 5 record for the Hawks with a 3.45 earned run average in 14 starts, which was tied for the seventh-most ion program history.  Mullen was twice named the Atlantic 1o and Big Five Pitcher of the Week.  Mullen had two complete-game shutouts against Texas-San Antonio and Saint Louis.  He posted all-time single season top 10 lists in wins, innings pitched (88.2, tied for fourth), and strikeouts (68, tied for eighth).

Palmer started all 245 conference games, batting .284 in conference play.  The sophomore also earned the team Scholar-Athlete Award this season.
