Week of September 5 – 12, 2012 Games

DREXEL  5 – 1

Results – Won 3 – 2 at # 22California, Lost 2 – 1 at # 16 Stanford

Mary Lynam – CAA Co-Rookie of the Week

Summary – On their west coast swing Drexel’s Mary Lynam scored the game winning goal to give Drexel a 3 – 2 overtime victory against #22 California.  Amanda Fleischut and Elise DiDonato scored the other goals for the Dragons.  Goalkeeper Jantien Gunter posted 6 saves.

The 5 game winning streak for the Dragons came to an end as #16 Stanford handed Drexel their first loss of the season 2 – 1.  Kristen Focht scored the lone Drexel goal.

Lynam was named the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week.

Drexel moved up to #15 in the Penn/Metro NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.

Next Game – at Lafayette 9/14

LA SALLE 2 – 4

Results – Lost 8 – 3 at Columbia

Summary – Columbia scored five straight second half goals to pull away from LaSalle to earn an 8 – 3 victory.  Explorer goals were posted by Becca Chylack, Mariel Papa, and Olivia Leamon.  Columbia took an early 3 – 0 lead the LaSalle cut to 3 – 2.  The Explorers would get no closer.

Next Game – at Rider 9/15

PENN  3 – 2

Results – Won 5 – 4 over Liberty, Lost 3 – 2 OT against Appalachian State in Lynchburg, VA. Lost 3 – 0 vs. Rider at Franklin Field

Summary – Amelia Cohn scored two goals to lead Penn to a 5- 4 win over Liberty.  Cohen’s second goal of the day put Penn ahead 4 – 1.  Liberty got back to within 4 – 3 before Julie Tahan scored to make the score 5 – 3.  Sunny Stirewalt and Sarah Hasson had the other Penn goals.

One day later Penn faced Appalachian State.  Elizabeth Hitti scored a goal and added an assist, but Penn suffered its first loss of the season in overtime by a score of 3 – 2.  Hitti had the first goal and a second half goal by Tahan gave the Red and Blue a 2 – 1 lead.  Appalachian State’s Jessie Stuart tied the game in the 66th minute to force overtime.  Casey Lammando scored off a loose ball in front of the net for the game winner.

Penn dropped its second straight game getting shutout by Rider 3 – 0 at Franklin Field.  Cohen, coming off an Ivy League Honor Roll nod, had two shots for the Quakers.

 

Next Game – at Cornell 9/15

SAINT JOSEPH’S  1 – 4

Results – Lost at Fairfield 2 – 1

Summary – Nicole Gerdes scored her second goal of the season to bring the Hawks to within 2 – 1 with 10 minutes to play.  The Hawks would get no closer as the Stags defense stood tall to preserve the win.  Goalkeeper Kate Mitchell made 6 saves for SJU and Abby Hoover added a defensive save.

Next Game – vs. Quinnipiac 9/14 at Ryan Field

TEMPLE  2 – 4

Results – Lost vs. Lafayette 3 – 0 at Geasey Field

Summary – Temple was close in shots with 13 to Lafayette’s 17.  Goalkeeper Lizzy Miller saved 7 shots, but the Owls could not get anything through the Lafayette defense and lost 3 – 0.  Katie Briglia had 3 shots, one on goal for the Owls.  Lafayette goals were scored by Jenna Seybert, Kristen Heaney, and Deanna Dicroce.

Next Game – vs. Delaware 9/14 at Geasey Field

VILLANOVA  4 – 2

Results – Won vs. St. Francis 2 – 1 at Villanova Stadium, Lost at # 1 North Carolina 10 – 0

Summary – Down 1 – 0 Villanova got goals from Jessica Svoboda and Kayla Kenney to give Villanova a 2 – 1 lead.  That lead stood as the Wildcats defense kept the Red Flash from scoring.  For her efforts Kenney was named to the Big East Honor Roll.

Villanova travelled to Newark, DE to meet top ranked North Carolina.  The Wildcats came into the game riding a two game winning streak, but found out why the Tar Heels are # 1by losing 10 – 0.  UNC outshot Villanova 23 – 5.  Wildcats Goalkeeper Alex Diekmann made 8 saves while under constant attack.
