Week of November 25 – December 2, 2012 Games

PhillyCollegeSports.com Player of the Week – LaSalle Guard Tyreek Duren

LA SALLE 4 – 1 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 77 – 74 vs. Villanova OT, Won 63 – 52 at Rider

Summary –

LaSalle 77 Villanova 74 OT – The Explorers Tyreek Duren tied the game with a three-pointer with 6 seconds to play in regulation. In the overtime period Duren made a backdoor cut getting a perfect pass from D.J. Peterson to convert a layup to give LaSalle the lead. The Explorers held on to beat Villanova in the initial Big Five game of the season. Ramon Galloway was the leading scorer for LaSalle with 26 points.

LaSalle 63 Rider 52 – The Explorers followed up their win over Villanova beating Rider. LaSalle led the entire game jumping out to a 24 – 6 lead, but had to withstand a Rider charge in the second half to claim their fourth win of the season. Duren scored a game-high 20 points and handed out 6 assists.

Next Game – 12/5 vs. Penn State at the Palestra. LaSalle will unviel throwback uniforms against the Nittany Lions

PENN – 2 – 6 Overall

Results – Won 65 – 54 vs. Binghamton,

Lost 58 – 47 at Penn State

Summary –

Penn 65 Binghamton 54 – The Quakers ended a 5-game losing streak beating Binghamton. The stats were against Penn as they committed 17 turnovers, had a 10 rebound disadvantage, and shot 35%. The Red and Blue did get 15 points from Miles Cartwright and 11 points and 13 rebounds from Fran Dougherty.

Penn State 58 Penn 47 – Trailing by 10 with five minutes to play Penn mounted a final charge to get to within five at 49 – 44 with just over three minutes on the clock. The Red and Blue got no closer as Penn State closed out the game with a 9 – 3 run. Leading scorer Miles Cartwright was held to 4 points shooting 2 of 11. Tony Hicks led the team with 10 points.

Next Game – 12/8 vs. Villanova

SAINT JOSEPH’S 4 – 2 Overall

Result – Won 74 – 55 vs. American, Lost 80 – 51 at #11 Creighton

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 74 American 55 – American mounted a run at the end of the first half to take a 7 point lead. The Hawks finally responded with a run to lead by as many as 20 in the second half. Langston Galloway reached the 1,000 point plateau making his first two shots to reach the milestone. He is the 50th Hawk to reach that level, and the 21st to do so in his third year. Galloway scored 18 in the game.

#11 Creighton 80 Saint Joseph’s 51 – In Omaha the Hawks fell behind 21 – 5 at the start and never recovered as Creighton, behind a game-high 23 points from Doug McDermott, eased to the win. The Hawks shot 37.7% in the game. Galloway scored a team-best 10 points.

Next Game – 12/7 at Coppin State

TEMPLE 5 – 0 Overall

Results – Won 80 – 75 vs. Delaware, Won 54 – 39 at Buffalo, Won 70 – 62 vs. Wagner

Summary –

Temple 80 Delaware 75 – The Owls got 18 points each from Khalif Wyatt and Scootie Randall to lead Temple to the win. Delaware got to within 72 – 69 with 2:24 remaining in the game, but the Cherry and White made 8 of 11 free throws to end the game.

Temple 54 Buffalo 39 – Buffalo missed 20 of their first 23 shots as Temple jumped out to an early lead. The Owls led 31 – 16 at halftime. The defense forced 17 Buffalo turnovers that led to 21 points for the Cherry and White. Anthony Lee had a team leading 10 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.

Temple 70 Wagner 62 – With the win Temple opened the season with a 5 – 0 record, the first time since the 1987-88 campaign. It was not easy for the Owls who had to overcome an early 8-point deficit. The Owls would open up a 10 point lead en route to the victory. Khalif Wyatt had a game-high 26 points. Scootie Randall had 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Next Game – 12/5 at Villanova

VILLANOVA 4 – 3 Overall, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 77 –74 at LaSalle OT, Won 62 – 52 at Vanderbilt

Summary –

LaSalle 77 Villanova 74 OT – The Wildcats opened up an 11-point lead in the second half, but could not withstand a LaSalle rally that tied the game in regulation on a three by Tyreek Duren. Villanova jumped out to an early lead in overtime, but again LaSalle mounted a comeback to get the lead with 6 seconds remaining. Mouphtaou Yarou led the team in scoring with 20 points. JayVaughn Pinkston added 19. Each player pulled down 7 rebounds.

Villanova 62 Vanderbilt 52 – The Wildcats bounced back from the loss at LaSalle to defeat Vanderbilt in the SEC – Big East Challenge. Yarou scored 16 points and added 7 rebounds. Pinkston had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Defensively, Villanova held Vanderbilt to 17 – 46 shooting (37%).

Next Game – 12 /5 vs. Temple at the Pavilion

DREXEL 2 – 5 Overall

Results – Lost 75 – 66 vs. Rider

Summary –

Rider 75 Drexel 66 – Damion Lee scored a career-high 28 points, 11 points in a row in the second half, but it was not enough as Drexel fell 75 – 66 to Rider, who shot 64% in the second half. Rider responded to the Lee run with an 11 – 2 run to take control of the game. The Dragons committed 16 turnovers that led to 23 points for the Broncs.

Next Game – 12/7 at Tennessee State
