PhillyCollegeSports.com – Player of the Week – Alyssa Baron, Penn

Baron became the third fastest player in Penn history to reach the 1,000 point plateau.  She scored 15 points and handed out 9 assists in the Big Five victory for the Red and Blue against LaSalle.  Her milestone point was important for the team as the three-pointer gave Penn the lead back at 47 – 46 with 9:03 to play.  Baron gave Penn control of the game at the 3:21 mark with a blocked three, then got fouled going for the ball, and sunk the ensuing two free throws.

 

 

LA SALLE 1 – 7 Overall, 0 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 69 – 61 at Georgetown, Lost 65 – 56 at Penn, Lost 49 – 44 at Villanova

Summary –

Georgetown 69 LaSalle 61 – The Explorers held the lead until the 6:27 mark of the second half.  The teams traded the lead until Georgetown went on a 12 – 0 run and put the game out of reach.  Brittany Wilson had 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.  Shanel Harrison added 15 points.

Penn 65 LaSalle 56 – Wilson posted another double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Shanel Harrison added 10 points and 10 rebounds in a Big Five loss at Penn.  20 of the 24 points scored by Wilson came in the second half.  An 8 – 0 run gave the Red and Blue a 10 point lead with 2:17 to play, and control of the game.

Villanova 49 LaSalle 44 – The Explorers led in the second half 31 – 27, but fell victim to a 17 – 2 run by the Cats.  The 44 – 33 lead for Villanova was too much to overcome.  Wilson led all scorers with 23 points.  Ebonee Jones scored 12.  The losing streak for the Explorers reached 4 games.

Next Game – 12/5 vs. Albany at the Gola Arena

PENN – 2 – 3 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 65 – 56 vs. LaSalle, Won 58 – 53 vs. Bucknell (OT)

Summary –

Penn 65 LaSalle 56 – Alyssa Baron scored the 1,000th point in her career at a critical time as her three-pointer gave Penn a second half lead of 47 – 46 with 8:24 to play.  An 8 – 0 run gave the Red and Blue a 10 point edge they held.  With the win Penn got its second Big Five win in two seasons.  Baron scored 15 points and contributed 9 assists.  Kara Bonenberger scored 16 points.  Renee Busch added 13 points, and Courtney Wilson had 7 key points.Penn 58 Bucknell 53 (OT) – Wilson had a potential game winning shot go in and out at the end of regulation.  She responded by making the game-winning three-pointer in overtime to beat Bucknell.  Penn made only 28.8% of their shots.  Keiera Ray led Penn with 13 points.  Baron had 12 points and 5 assists.

Next Game – 12/5 at St. Francis NY

SAINT JOSEPH’S 4 – 2 Overall

Result – Won 71 – 55 at Hofstra, Won 61 – 44 at St. Francis (PA)

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 71 Hofstra 55 – The Hawks got a career-high 19 points from Ashley Prim in their win at Hofstra.  Saint Joseph’s got off to a good start, and took a 17-point lead into halftime.  Hofstra shot just 35.7%.  The Hawk defense forced 28 turnovers.  Prim made 7 of 10 field goal attempts, a career-high 5 of 7 from beyond the arc, along handed out 4 assists, made 4 steals, and pulled down 2 rebounds.

Saint Joseph’s 61  St. Francis 44 – Chatilla van Grinsven matched the school record for rebounds in a single game with 21, and scored a game-high 18 points to lead her team to the win.  The Hawks had a 2-point halftime advantage that St. Francis (PA) turned into a 1-point deficit.  Saint Joseph’s responded with a 15 – 0 run to take control of the game.  The defense held St. Francis (PA) to 6 of 29 shooting in the second half.  Natasha Cloud tallied 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Van Grinsven helped the Hawks to a 48 0 35 edge on the boards.  The 21 rebounds matched the record held by Dale Hodges and Trish Brown.

Next Game – 12/5 vs. Lafayette at the Hagan Arena

TEMPLE 5 – 2 Overall

Results – Won 70 – 56 at Bowling Green, Won 74 – 67 vs. Syracuse

Summary –

Temple 70 Bowling Green 56 – In a nine minute stretch the Temple defense denied Bowling Green a field goal giving the Owls an opportunity to surge to the lead behind the 12 – 2 run.  Temple led 41 – 37 at the 14:55 mark.  With 5:42 on the clock the Owls led 53 – 41. Temple shot 29 – 54 (53.7%) while Bowling Green was 22 – 57 (38.6%).  Sally Kabengano led Temple with 17 points.  Rateska Brown added 15 points.

Temple 74 Syracuse 67 – Trailing at halftime the Owls scored 49 second half points to hand the Orange their first loss of the season 74 – 67.  Temple had four double figure scorers in the game.  Victoria Macaulay had her fourth double-double scoring 20 points and getting 11 rebounds.  Tyonna Williams also contributed a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.   Brown scored 19 points and Natasha Thames chipped in 10 points.

Rateska Brown was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week.

Next Game – 12/6 vs. Kent State at McGonigle Hall

VILLANOVA 6 – 1 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 66 – 49 vs. Lehigh, Won 49 – 44 vs. LaSalle

Summary –

Villanova 66 Lehigh 49 – The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the game.  A 23 – 5 run opened a 30 – 9 lead at the 7:32 mark.  Early in the second half Villanova turned a 47 – 30 advantage into a 61 – 38 lead at the 8:28 mark to earn the win.  Rachel Roberts led the Wildcats with 14 points.

Villanova 49 LaSalle 44 – A 17 – 2 run by Villanova erased a 31 – 27 LaSalle lead as the Wildcats got by the Explorers 49 – 44.  The run was keyed by Emily Leer who scored a career-high 19 points and pulled down a career-high tying 7 rebounds. Leer made 8 of 10 field goal attempts.  Laura Sweeney contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Villanova and Penn share the top spot in the Big Five.

Next Game – 12 /8 at Saint Joseph’s

DREXEL 6 – 2 Overall

Results – Lost 58 – 55 at #24 South Carolina, Won 55 – 43 vs. Rhode Island at the TD Bank Classic, Won 66 – 49 vs. Vermont in the TD Classic Championship

Summary –

#24 South Carolina 58 Drexel 55 (OT) – Drexel built a 14-point halftime lead, but could not withstand a South Carolina charge down the stretch to force overtime.  The Gamecocks took their first lead of the game in the overtime period, and they survived a charge by the Dragons in the extra period.  Hollie Mershon notched her first career double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds.  Fiona Flanagan scored 11 points.

Drexel 55 Rhode Island 43 – The Dragons took the floor less than 48 hours after the South Carolina game against Rhode Island in the TD Classic in Burlington, VT.  Drexel was able to grind out a win over Rhode Island getting 16 points from Taylor Wootton.  Newcomer Meghan Creighton got a career-high with 13 points.  The freshman was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and was a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line.  Her three-pointer gave the Dragons a 35 – 22 lead and control of the game.  Renee Johnson-Allen had her first double-digit scoring game scoring 11 points.

Drexel 66 Vermont 49 – The Dragons built an early lead and turned up the defense beating the host Vermont Catamounts 66 – 49 to win the TD Classic.  Vermont did not score for the first 9:12 of the game.  With 7:52 on the clock the Dragons lead 20 – 2.  With the win Drexel matched the best eight-game start in program history at 6 – 2, as they posted an impressive 5 – 1 mark on the road trip.  Nicki Jones scored 20 points.  Creighton contributed 14 points making all 4 of her shots from distance.

Meghan Creighton was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
