Pinkston averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds per game leading Villanova to two Big Five victories this week.  He scored a game-high 27 points at the Hagan Arena in the game against Saint Joseph’s.

Week of December 1 – December 8, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 5 – 4 Overall

Results – Won 75 – 62 vs. Hartford, Won 65 – 57 vs. Stony Brook at the Madison Square Garden ECAC Holiday Festival

Summary –

La Salle 75 Hartford 62 – The Explorers held a 49 – 45 lead midway through the second half.  An 18 – 5 run put the game under La Salle’s control as they cruised to the victory.  Guard Tyrone Garland accounted for half of the points in the decisive Explorer surge.  Garland scored a team-high 17 points.  Forward Steve Zack scored 15 points making 7 of 8 from the free throw line.  He also had a team-high 10 rebounds.  La Salle had a 25 – 12 edge at the charity stripe.  Guard Tyreek Duren rounded out the Explorers double figures scorers with 10 points.  Mark Nwakamma scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down a game best 10 rebounds for Hartford.

La Salle 65 Stony Brook 57 – The Explorers rallied from a 31 – 22 halftime deficit to get their fifth win of the season.   La Salle fought back with a 13 – 2 run early in the second half to tie the game at 35.   Forward Jerrell Wright’s layup at the 9:48 mark gave La Salle its first lead at 42 – 41, a lead they would stretch to as many as 10 points.  Wright scored a game-high 21 points, 16 in the second half, to go with 5 rebounds.  Zack registered his fourth straight double-double scoring 11 points and taking down 11 rebounds.  Garland scored 12 points.  La Salle held Stony Brook to 30% shooting in the second half, who were led by Jameel Warney who scor4ed 15 points.

Results – Lost 77 – 54 at Villanova, Lost 75 – 69 (OT) vs. Wagner at The Palestra

Wagner 75 Penn 69 (OT) – The Red and Blue had two chances to win in regulation.  Guard Tony Hicks missed a jumper that Wagner rebounded.  Penn made a defensive stop and got the ball back, but guard Tony Bagtas lost the ball in the lane.  After desperation shot by Wagner, the game went into overtime.  Wagner scored the first 7 points in the extra period to take control.  Forward Fran Dougherty registered a double-double for Penn with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Forward Darien Nelson-Henry scored 11 points.  Bagtas had 7 points and 8 assists.  Guard Miles Jackson-Cartwright played 14 minutes due to foul trouble.  Kenneth Ortiz and Latif Rivers each scored 18 points for Wagner.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 4 – 4 Overall 0 – 2 Big Five

Result – Lost 77 – 69 at Temple, Lost 96 – 68 vs. Villanova at the Hagan Arena

Summary –

Temple 77 Saint Joseph’s 69 – It was the Big Five opener for both teams, and what is becoming this game’s tradition both teams played in a game that featured 14 ties and 11 lead changes.  The last lead came at 65 on a three-pointer by Hawks guard Langston Galloway with 4:27 to play.  Saint Joseph’s missed their next three from distance before Temple grabbed the lead on a layup by forward Anthony Lee at the 2:09 mark.  After Hawk forward Halil Kanacevic missed a trey, Owls guard Quenton DeCosey converted one of two free throws to give Temple a 68 – 65 lead.  Forward Ronald Roberts scored the last SJU basket at the 40 second mark that TU answered by making 7 of 8 free throws to ice the game.  Galloway led all scorers with 24 points for Saint Joe’s.  Roberts had 13 points and 8 rebounds.  DeAndre Bembry scored 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.  Guards Dalton Pepper and Will Cummings scored 16 each for Temple.  Cummings added a game-high 7 assists.  Lee recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  For the game Temple made 27 of 61 from the floor (44.3%) while Saint Joseph’s was 25 of 65 (38.5%), but went 6 of 26 from the three-point line.

#10 Villanova 96 Saint Joseph’s 68 – In front a standing-room only crowd at the Hagan Arena the Big Five Holy War went imto halftime with Villanova leading Saint Joseph’s 39 – 35.  The Wildcats took control in the second half with a 20 – 5 run.  The Hawks made a charge getting to within 61 – 48 with 11:33 to play, but Villanova responded go forge ahead 75 – 54 with just under 9 minutes remaining.  The lead stretched to the largest margin at the end of the game.  Villanova forward JayVaughn Pinkston scored a game-high 27 points followed by Wildcat guard James Bell who contributed 25 points and 14 rebounds.  Bell converted 5 of 10 three-pointers.  Darrun Hilliard scored 14 points.  As a team Villanova made 12 of 30 from beyond the arc.  Villanova protected the ball turning over only 5 times.  Saint Joseph’s guard Langston Galloway led the Hawks with 18 points and forward DeAndre Bembry contributed 17.  Forward Ronald Roberts scored 12 points and added 8 rebounds.  As a team the Hawks were 4 of 20 from distance.

TEMPLE 4 – 4 Overall 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 77 – 69 vs. Saint Joseph’s at the Liacouris Center, Lost 81 – 80 (OT) vs. Texas at the Wells Fargo Center.

Texas 81 Temple 80 (OT) – The Owls put on a big second half rally to take the lead by three late in the second half, but fell in heart breaking fashion in overtime.  The Owls can point to the foul line as cause for the loss.  Temple made 15 of 31 free throws.  Texas was not much better making 21 of 35.  With 9 minutes to play the Longhorns held a 66 – 56 lead.  The Owls responded with a 17 – 4 run over the next seven and a half minutes to take a 73 – 70 lead capped by a layup by guard Dalton Pepper at the 2:31 mark.  That would be the last points in regulation for Temple.  Texas tied the game making 3 free throws, while Temple missed two field goal attempts and four free throws down the stretch in regulation.  In overtime the Owls held a two-point lead but a free throw lane violation by Pepper negated a made free throw that would have given Temple a 3 point lead with 14 seconds on the clock.  Still the Owls held an 80 – 78 lead before Longhorns’ Javan Felix hit a three with 8 seconds left to win it.  Anthony Lee recorded a double-double for the Owls with a game-high 23 points and a game best 14 rebounds.  Pepper scored 20 points, and Will Cummings scored 13 points.  Quenton DeCosey scored 11 points and contributed 7 assists.  Jonathan Holmes led Texas with 16 points.  For the Game the Longhorns held a 55 – 42 rebounding edge, 20 – 10 on the offensive glass giving Texas a 21 – 9 edge in second chance points.

Results – Won 77 – 54 vs. Penn at the Pavilion, Won 96 – 68 at Saint Joseph’s

DREXEL 6 – 2 Overall

Results – Won 85 – 82 (3OT) vs. Cleveland State, Won 75 – 61 vs. Tennessee State at the DAC

Summary –

Drexel 85 Cleveland State 82 (3OT) – A pair of free throws by Dragons guard Frantz Massenat with 7 seconds to go gave Drexel its second straight tripe overtime win.  It took three overtimes for Drexel to defeat Alabama in their previous game.  Massenat made a layup at the 2:52 mark which gave Drexel their lead.  His drive and dish to forward Tavon Allen put the Dragons up 81 – 78 with 38 seconds to play.  Allen led Drexel with 23 points while Massenat had 21 points and 9 assists.  Forward Dartaye Ruffin had 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Drexel recorded a 43 – 34 edge in rebounds, 14 – 7 on the offensive end, to have a 23 – 5 edge in second chance points.  Cleveland State’s Jon Harris scored a game-high 27 points.

Drexel 75 Tennessee State 61 – This game lasted only 40 minutes as Drexel got a combined 41 points from guards Frantz Massenat and Chris Fouch to beat Tennessee State.  The Dragons are on a three game winning streak.  Massenat scored 21 points, 13 in the second half, and added 6 assists.  Fouch scored 20 and handed out 5 assists.  Kazembe Abif contributed 11 points for the Dragons.  Patrick Miller scored 21 points for winless Tennessee State.
