LA SALLE 3 – 5 Overall, 0 – 3 Big Five

Results – Lost 83 – 47 vs. Villanova at the Gola Arena

Summary –

Villanova 83 La Salle 47 – Explorers freshman Jasmine Alston registered her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Alicia Crooper contributed 11 points. Alston also had 5 of the teams 6 assists, but the numbers could not overcome the hot shooting Wildcats who hit 52.5% of their shots. La Salle could not get untracked against the Villanova defense making 16 – 64 from the floor and 4 of 21 from beyond the arc. Emily Leer led Villanova with 21 points.

PENN 4 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 67 – 57 vs. Army at The Palestra

Summary –

Penn 67 Army 57 – The Red and Blue trialed 49 – 48 in the second half when Alyssa Baron and Sydney Stipanovich, each playing with 4 fouls, sparked an 18 – 4 run to lead Penn to victory. Baron scored 22 to 0pace the Quakers. Stipanovich added 17 points. Kara Bonenberger scored 14 points while Katy Allen grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds. Penn has won four straight.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 9 – 1 Overall, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 73 – 60 vs. Hofstra at The Hagan Arena

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 73 Hofstra 60 – Senior guard Erin Shields became the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000 points as she scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Hawks to their eighth straight win. The Hawks took control early getting out to a 19 – 7 lead. SJU took a 33 – 23 lead into halftime, then started the second half with a 14 – 2 run to take a 47 – 25 lead. The Hawks made 25 of 61 from the floor (41%), and hit 7 of 18 three-point shots. The Saint Joe’s defense forced 27 turnovers by the Pride.

Guard Natasha Cloud posted another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and added 8 assists. Sophomore forward Sarah Fairbanks scored 15 points.

TEMPLE 5 – 3 Overall, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 61 – 52 at Montana, Lost 82 – 76 at #23 Syracuse

Summary –

Temple 61 Montana 52 – The Owls won their third straight game and ended a 10 game home winning streak by the Grizzlies with the win. A 9 – 1 run at the opening of the second half gave Temple the lead they held to the end. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp registered a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman guard Feyonda Fitzgerald scored 13 points. Temple out-rebounded Montana 52 – 38.

#23 Syracuse 82 Temple 76 – The Orange started strong and held a 43 – 32 lead at halftime. The Owls stormed back in the second half and opened up a 6 point edge at 57 – 51 lead. Syracuse fought back to tie the game at 59, then took control with a 9 – 1 run that Temple could not erase. Fitzgerald led Temple with a career-high 28 points. Natasha Thames registered her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Owls out-rebounded the Orange 46 – 40. Shakeya Leary led Syracuse with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Next Games – 12/ 19 vs. Howard, 12/22 vs. Villanova at McGonigle Hall

VILLANOVA 8 – 1 Overall,10 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 83 – 47 at La Salle

Summary –

Villanova 83 La Salle 47 – The Wildcats bounced back with a Big Five win against the Explorers. Villanova shot 52.5% from the field and used balance scoring with 3 players in double figures; Emily Leer with a game-high 21 points, Samantha Wilkes with a career-high 13, and Lauren Burford 11 points. Defensively Villanova held La Salle with 25% shooting. Villanova started the second half with an 11 – 2 run to take a commanding 50 – 21 lead. Jasmine Alston paced La Salle with a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The Wildcats have now won five straight over the Explorers.

DREXEL 4 – 5 Overall

Results – Won 62 – 55 vs. St. John’s, Won 53 – 45 vs. Prairie View at the St. John’s Classic

Drexel 62 St. John’s 55 – The Dragons ended a four game losing streak defeating the Red Storm in a see-saw battle. Rachel Pearson recorded her first double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Dragons overcame an 8 point halftime deficit to get the win. Sarah Curran scored 14 points and Fiona Flanagan added 11. Defensively, Drexel limited St. John’s leading scorer Aliyyah Handford who came into the game averaging over 23 points per game to just 6 points. It was the second win over a Big East team for Drexel this season.

Drexel 53 Prairie View 45 – The Dragons won their second straight game and posted their first back to back wins of the year. Pearson scored 14 points and 9 rebounds in being named the Most Valuable Player of the event. Drexel led from start to finish holding a 20-point lead for much of the contest. Alexis Smith added 10 points.
