Halil Kanacevic, Saint Joseph’s and Dalton Pepper, Temple

Kanacevic set a career-high in scoring with 27 points against Drexel.  The senior forward shot 12 – 13 in that contest and added 14 rebounds and 4 assists.  Kanacevic scored 7 points against Loyola while handing out a team leading 7 assists.  He leads to the team in rebounding and assists this season.

Pepper registered 14 points against Texas Southern adding 8 rebounds and 8 assists.  In the win against LIU Brooklyn Pepper scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds for his first double-double in a Temple uniform.  The senior guard made 10 of 12 from the field, 6 of 8 from the three-point line.

Week of December 15 – December 22, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 6 – 6 Overall 0 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 80 – 54 vs. Wagner, Lost 71 – 58 at Miami

Summary –

La Salle 80 Wagner 54 – The Explorers got their offense rolling and pounded the boards in defeating Wagner.  La Salle sprinted out to a 21 – 7 lead and never looked back.  The front court combination of Jerrell Wright and Steve Zack led the Explorers.  Wright had 17 points and 7 rebounds while Zack scored 12 points, pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.  This was the fifth double-double of the season for Zack who leads the Atlantic 10 in that category.  The 17 rebounds were the most by the Explorers since Rasual Butler grabbed 20 against Morris Brown in 2001.  La Salle out rebounded Wagner 50 – 29.  Tyreek Duren and Sam Mills scored in double figures getting 11 and 13 points.  The Explorers turned the ball over just 3 times.

Miami 71 La Salle 58 – Steve Zack recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Guard Tyreek Duren and Sam Mills scored 18 and 15 points each.  However, it was not enough as the defending ACC Champions held the lead for most of the game.  The Explorers got to within 7 points with just over 2 minutes to play, but got no closer.

Next Game – 1/4/2014 at Penn

PENN 2 – 7 Overall 0 – 2 Big Five

Result – Lost 76 – 62 at Marist

Summary –

Marist 76 Penn 62 – The Red and Blue played their first game in 15 days and did not get untracked  trailing 47 – 24 at halftime.  Penn closed the gap to 14 points, but that would be as close as the Quakers would get in this contest.  Fran Dougherty led Penn with 9 points and 9 rebounds.  Tony Hicks also added 9 points.  Penn played without center Darien Nelson-Henry who did not make the trip due to a concussion.

Next Game – 12/29 vs. Rider at the Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S 6 – 4 Overall 0 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 75 – 55 vs. Drexel at the Hagan Arena, Won 88 – 77 at Loyola, MD

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 75 Drexel 55 – It was a tale of two halves.  Drexel got the better of it in the first half, but in the second half they had no answer for Hawks forward Halil Kanacevic who scored a career-high 27  points and grabbed 14 rebounds.  Kanacevic went 12 of 13 from the field.  The Dragons had a 9-point lead in the first half.  The Hawks came back to get to within 27 – 23 at the break.  SJU won the second half by a 52 – 28 margin shooting 57.6 % in the half (19 – 33).  Forward DeAndre Bembry scored 18 points while Chris Wilson and Langston Galloway scored 11 points each.  Tavon Allen led Drexel with 20 points.  Rodney Williams scored 6 points while taking down 10 rebounds.

Saint Joseph’s 88 Loyola MD 77 – The Hawks shot a blistering 64.5% (20 – 31) in the first half in taking a 60 – 24 halftime lead.  In the second half SJU cooled off while Loyola heated up.  However, the Hawk lead was too big to overcome as Saint Joe’s held off Greyhounds.  Saint Joseph’s had 4 players score in double figures led by Ronald Roberts with 20.  Chris Wilson and Isaiah Miles scored 17 points each.  It was a career-high for Miles.  Langston Galloway added 14 points.  For the game the Hawks were 24 – 52 from the field (46.2%) and made 8 of 21 three-pointers.

TEMPLE 5 – 5 Overall 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 90 – 89 vs. Texas Southern at the Liacouris Center, Won 101 – 65 vs. LIU Brooklyn at the Barclay’s Center

Summary –

Texas Southern 90 Temple 89 – Aaric Murray returned to Philadelphia.  The former La Salle forward made his mark scoring 48 points to set both the Liacouris Center scoring record and the most points scored against the Owls.  Still, the Cherry and White fought back to take a one-point lead with 14 seconds to play on two free throws by Anthony Lee.  But the Owls could not hang on.  Murray scored the most points in a Division I game this season.  Both teams shot the ball well.  Texas Southern  shot 35 – 59 (59.3%) while Temple made 36 of 54 (56.3%).  Temple had 5 players in double figures.  Quenton DeCosey had a team-high 19 points while Lee added 18.  Will Cummings scored 16 points and handed out 4 assists.   Dalton Pepper had 14 points while getting 8 rebounds and 8 assists.  Daniel Dingle scored 13 points.

Temple 101 LIU Brooklyn 65 –  The Owls topped the century mark for the first time since 2007 years.  Three Temple players established career records in the win.  Dalton Pepper led all scorers with 26 points (10 – 12, 6 – 8 from distance) while taking down 10 rebounds to record his first double-double.  Will Cummings had a good-shooting second half to score 23 points.  Quenton DeCosey also set a career mark with 19 points.  Daniel Dingle added 12 points while Anthony Lee scored 10.

Next Game – 1/1/2014 at Rutgers

#8/10 VILLANOVA 11 – 0 Overall 3 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 88 – 67 vs. Rider at the Pavilion

Summary –

#8/10 Villanova 88 Rider 67 – Freshman guard Josh Hart set a career-mark with 19 points to lead the Wildcats to their 11th consecutive win.  Hart was 7 of 8 from the field and made 3 of 4 three-pointers.  JayVaughn Pinkston added 14 points for the Wildcats while Darrun Hilliard scored 13 points and took down a team-high 7 rebounds.  Eleven of thirteen players who saw action for the Wildcats scored.  The Blue and White shot 54% in the first half to take a 43 – 29 halftime lead.  Anthony Miles scored a game-high 22 for Rider.

Next Game – 12/28 at #2 Syracuse

DREXEL 8 – 3 Overall

Results – Lost 75 – 55 at Saint Joseph’s, Won 59 – 49 vs. St. Francis at the DAC

Summary –

Drexel 59 St. Francis 49 – The Drexel defense stood up allowing a season-low 49 points in bouncing back from the loss at Saint Joseph’s.  The Red Flash shot 36% from the floor.  Drexel won the rebounding battle 39 – 26.  The guard combination of Chris Fouch and Frantz Massenat led the Drexel offense.  Fouch scored 15 points while Massenat added 13 points.
