PhillyCollegeSports.com Player of the Week – Halil Kanacevic, Saint Joseph’s

The Senior forward 19 points while adding 13 rebounds and 6 assists in Saint Joe’s upset bid against nationally ranked Massachusetts.  Kanacevic followed that effort by scoring 23 points and taking down 7 rebounds at George Mason.  For the week the senior averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds.

LA SALLE 9 – 6 Overall, 2 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 76 – 72 vs. George Washington at the Gola Arena, Won 75 – 56 at Duquesne

Summary –

La Salle 76 George Washington 72 – The Explorers held the lead throughout the second half, but had to survive a late rally by the Colonials to get their first conference win of the season.  It came down to the last few second.  GW guard Joe McDonald stole the ball and drive to the basket in hopes of tying the game.  La Salle guard Sam Mills took a charge from McDonald to save the game.  Mills scored a game-high 17 points.  Guards Tyrone Garland scored 15 points and Tyreek Duren added 13 points and 5 assists.  Colonial Forward Isaiah Armwood registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Patricio Garino also scored 15 points.

La Salle 75 Duquesne 56 – The Explorers win streak reaches four in a row.  La Salle used a big second half to pull away for the road victory.  Center Steve Zack had 13 points and 11 rebounds for his 8th double-double of the season, which leads the Atlantic 10.  Guard Tyreek Duren led all scorers with 23 points and 6 assists.  Fellow guard Tyrone Garland posted 17 points.  La Salle had 17 assists on 27 baskets.

Next Game – 1/15 vs. Rhode Island at the Gola Arena, 1/18 vs. Temple at The Palestra

PENN 3 – 10 Overall, 1 – 0 Ivy League,  0 – 2 Big Five

Result – Won 77 – 74 vs. Princeton at the Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S 10 – 5 Overall, 1 – 1 Atlantic 10, 0 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 66 – 62 at #19 UMass, Won 84 – 80 at George Mason

Summary –

#19 Massachusetts 66 Saint Joseph’s 62 – The Hawks held a 57 – 46 lead with 6:23 to play on a dunk by forward Halil Kanacevic.  However, the Minutemen ended the game with an 18 – 5 run to secure the victory.  UMass guard Chaz Williams scored 8 of his game-high 22 points in the run.  Kanacevic led Saint Joe’s with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Guard Langston Galloway added 18 points and forward DeAndre Bembry scored 16 points.  The Hawks lost forward Ronald Roberts due to back spasms after a fall in the first half.

Saint Joseph’s 84 George Mason 80 – Trailing by three with 7:25 remaining in the game the Hawks rallied behind a 9 – 0 run to take a 74 – 67 lead with 3:16 to play.  The lead would stretch to 80 – 70 at the 45 second mark.  Halil Kanacevic scored 23 for the Hawks and fellow senior Langston Galloway tallied 20 points.  Papa Ndao scored a career-high 13 points staring in place of the injured Roberts.

TEMPLE 5 – 9 Overall, 0 – 4 American Athletic Conference, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 82 – 75 vs. USF, Lost 79 – 69 vs. #24/22 Memphis at the Liacouris Center

Summary –

USF 82 Temple 75 – It was the first home game for the Owls in the American Athletic Conference.  The Bulls spoiled it with a 16 – 3 run late in the second half to get the lead and held off the Owls for the win.  Temple got to within 75 – 74 on a three-pointer by guard Quenton DeCosey, but the only points the Cherry and White got was a free throw by DeCosey.  Center Anthony Lee scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  DeCosey added 20 points and Dalton Pepper contributed 17.  Bulls forward Victor Rudd led all scorers with 23 points and all rebounders with 11.  USF outscored Temple 50 – 30 in the paint.

#24/22 Memphis 79 Temple 69 – Guard Dalton Pepper scored a game-high 24 points.  Eight of the points came in a late run that brought Temple to within 5 with 2:19 to play.  The Tigers closed out the game with a 10 – 5 run.  Rebounding proved to be the difference as Memphis outrebounded Temple 45 – 28, 16 – 5 on the offensive glass to gain a 17 – 0 advantage on second chance points.  Guard Quenton DeCosey scored 18 points, and Will Cummings added 11 points and handed out 5 assists.  Shaq Goodwin led the way for Memphis with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

#6 VILLANOVA 15 – 1 Overall, 4 – 0 Big East, 3 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 83 – 67 at Seton Hall, Won 74 – 67 at St. John’s

Summary –

#6 Villanova 83 Seton Hall 67 – Senior forward JayVaughn Pinkston reached the 1,00 point milestone scoring 17 in the win over Seton Hall.  Guard Darrun Hilliard led the Wildcats with 19 points.  He went 4 – 5 from the three-point line.  Guard Ryan Arcidiacono scored 14 points  while fellow back-court mate Josh Hart added 11.  Pirates forward Brian Oliver led all scorers with 20 points.

#6 Villanova 74 St. John’s 67 – The Wildcats did not shoot the ball particularly well making 19 of 54 from the floor (35.2%), but used a 10 – 2 run late in the second half to post another conference win.  The Red Storm held a 56 – 55 lead when Ryan Arcidiacono stole the ball for the Wildcats, found forward Kris Jenkins who made a three-pointer to give Villanova the lead.  JayVaughn Pinkston led Villanova with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Guard Josh Hart scored 14 points and Arcidiacono added 13 points.  Guard James Bell scored 4 points, but grabbed 10 rebounds.  For St. John’s DeAngelo Harrison  scored a game-high 22 points.  The Red Storm went 23 – 67 from the field (34.3%).

Next Game – 1/18 vs. DePaul at the Pavilion

DREXEL 9 – 6 Overall, 1 – 1 Colonial Athletic Conference

Results – Lost 85 – 73 at William & Mary, Won 93 – 88 (2 OT) vs. Northeastern at the DAC

Summary –

William & Mary 85 Drexel 73 – The Dragons trailed by 46 – 30 at halftime.  It was too steep a hill to climb.  Drexel made a run getting to within seven points, but could not overcome the Tribe.   Guard Frantz Massenat scored a game-high 19 points.  Forward Tavon Allen and guard Chris Fouch scored 18 points apiece.  Marcus Thornton led the Tribe with 18 points.  William & Mary made 11 of 23 from beyond the arc while Drexel could only make 3 of 18 from distance.

Drexel 93 Northeastern 88 (2 OT) – It took two overtime periods.  Guards Chris Fouch and Frantz Massenat combined for 58 points to lead the Dragons to their first CAA win.  Fouch scored a game-high 31 points, 7 in the second overtime to keep the Dragons in front.  Fouch made 10 – 15 from the floor, 6 of 8 from three-point land.  Massenat scored a career-high 27 points, 13 from the free throw line while grabbing 121 rebounds and handing out 8 assists.  Drexel had the lead near the end of regulation and the first overtime, but Northeastern guard Demetrius Pollard scored to send the game to the extra periods.

Next Game – 1/14 vs. Towson at The DAC, 1/18 at UNCW
