#5 Seed Marquette Golden Eagles 56 #4 Seed Villanova Wildcats 53
The Villanova Wildcats had their last two shots blocked by Marquette Golden Eagles forward Katherine Plouffe. The Wildcats fall in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament in Chicago 56 – 53.
Sophomore guard Catherine Coyer put Villanova ahead 53 – 51 with just over a minute to play. That would be the last points the Wildcats would score. Plouffe made a free throw with 1:06 showing to bring the Golden Eagles within a point. With 18.4 seconds Plouffe converted both free throws to give the lead back to Marquette at 54 – 53.
Villanova put the ball in the hands of Caroline Coyer again who drove to the basket. Her layup attempt was blocked by Plouffe with under 10 seconds to play. Two free
throws by Ashley Santos gave Marquette a 56 – 53 lead with 5.9 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats needed a three-pointer to tie the game. Senior guard Devon Kane attempted a rushed shot from beyond the arc, but Brooklyn Pumroy got a hand on the ball as the clock ran out.
Kane scored 19 points for Villanova who end the season at 22 – 8, and will await a bid to a post-season tournament.
