Saint Joseph’s Advances In Women’s NCAA Tournament, Defeats Georgia 67 – 57

The Hawks are moving on in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament by virtue of a 67 – 57 win over the Georgia Bulldogs at the Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, CT.  It was the seventh time that Saint Joseph’s advanced to the second round.  The Hawks were led by senior guard Erin Shields who scored a game-high 18 points making 7 of 16 from the floor, 4 for 6 from three-point distance.  Junior guard Natasha Cloud scored 13 points while taking down 7 rebounds and handed out 4 assists.  Junior forward Ashley Robinson recorded a double-double with 10 points and rebounds apiece.

Trailing 49 – 47 Saint Joseph’s took control with a 10 – 0 run.  Cloud started the run with nine and half minutes to play.  Robinson ended it with a layup with 6:38 on the clock.  Late in the half six unanswered points gave the Hawks a 65 – 54 lead with just under 4 minutes to play.  It was the largest Saint Joe’s lead of the game.

For the game SJU shot 26 of 56 (46.4%) while holding Georgia to 22 of 65 shooting (33.8%).  Erika Ford led Georgia with 16 points.  Krista Donald scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

In the second round game on Tuesday Saint Joseph’s will meet the host Connecticut Huskies, the one-seed on their home floor.
