PHILADELPHIA, PA. 4/13/2014 – The La Salle Explorers women’s lacrosse team leveled their Atlantic 10 record at 2 – 2 with a weekend sweep. On Friday La Salle upset Duquesne. This afternoon they defeated the Bonaventure Bonnies 13 – 6 at McCarthy Stadium. The two wins indicate that Explorers are coming together for a run at the conference playoffs.
“We think so,” said La Salle Coach Candace Taglianetti-Bossell. “It was not the way we wanted to start the conference, but we started with two of the top three teams (Massachusetts and Richmond). We wanted to come out with two wins out of that, but at this point we have to put that behind us and look forward to building momentum.”
The Explorers took an early lead behind 4 straight goals, then took an 8 – 4 lead at intermission. For the game La Salle doubled up the Bonnies in shots 34 – 17. Freshman midfielder Toni Massetti and sophomore attack Katelyn Fay each recorded a hat trick. Massetti put 10 shots on net. Junior midfielder Caitlyn Brostrand added two goals. Freshman goal keeper Gabby Antonelli made 9 saves. Midfielder Taylor Fallon scored two for St. Bonaventure.
“I can’t say we played great today,” Taglianetti-Bossell said. “We found a way to win today as each player found a way to win each battle. It wasn’t pretty, but we were finding ways.”
La Salle improves to 8 – 5 overall. The team has three more conference games that will decide their playoff fate. The next outing is a Friday, April 18 match against city rival Saint Joseph’s. The Explorers close the regular season with two road games against George Washington and George Mason, team which La Salle will contend with for a playoff spot.
