Drexel Records Two Shutouts, La Salle Wins City Game vs. Temple, Saint Joseph’s Winning Streak Snapped, Kelsey Haycook Sets La Salle Point Total Record

Week of September 16 – September 23, 2013 Games

DREXEL DRAGONS 3 – 5 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. George Washington, Won 1 – 0 vs. Wagner both at Vidas Field

Summary –

Drexel 2 George Washington 0 – The Dragons got goals from Melissa Chapman and Megan Hammaker who put home a rebound off her penalty kick.

Drexel 1 Wagner 0– Jackie Sieder scored the only goal of the game just minutes before halftime.  Sam Greenfield was credited with the assist.  Drexel goal keeper Kelsie Fye, the CAA Co-Player of the Week, recorded her second shutout of the weekend.  The Dragons put 8 shots on goal,  Fye was forced to make one save.

Next Game – 9/26 vs. College of Charleston at Vidas Field

LA SALLE EXPLORERS 3 – 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 4 – 1 at #21 West Virginia, Won 3 – 2 (OT) vs. Temple at McCarthy Stadium

Summary –

#12 West Virginia 4 La Salle 1 – The Mountaineers scored 3 goals in the first 33 minutes to take control.  Kelsey Haycook got a goal back for the Explorers late in the first half.  All goals came in the opening stanza.

LaSalle 3 Temple 2 (OT) – Jessika Kagan converted a cross from Kristin Haugstad in the 94th minute to give the Explorers their second overtime win of the season.   Kagan gave La Salle the lead in the 72nd minute on her other goal of the game assisted by Katherine Hennessey.  Early in the game Kelsey Haycook scored off a feed by Maryam Huseini.  It was the 114th career point for Haycook surpassing Amy Schneider for the all-time program lead.  Explorer goal keeper Jessica Wiggins had a game-high 6 saves, 4 in the second half.

Next Game – 11/1– 9/28 vs. Florida Gulf Coast University at McCarthy Stadium

PENN QUAKERS 3 – 1 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsTied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at VCU, Won 1 – 0 at Delaware

Summary –

Penn 0 VCU 0 – The Rams had an 11 – 4 edge in shots, but none of the shots got be either goal keepers.  Penn goal keeper Kahlijah Terilli was credited with 4 saves.

Penn 1 Delaware 0 – The Red and Blue got a goal by Kaitlyn Moore late in the first half and made it stand to get the victory.  Katherine Myhre was credited with the assist.  Each team registered 6 shots on goal.  All six by Delaware came in the second half.

Next Game – 9/27 vs. Harvard at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S HAWKS 6 –4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Result – Won 2 – 0 vs. Quinnipiac, Lost 1 – 0 vs. Columbia both at Sweeney Field

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 2 Quinnipiac 0 – The Hawks recorded their fifth straight win and shutout.  SJU goal keeper Allison Ebling had 2 saves.  The goals were scored by Olivia McEachern and Ramsey McMenamin.

Next Game – 9/26 at Richmond

TEMPLE OWLS 7 – 2 – x Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Delaware, Lost 3 – 2 (OT) at La Salle

Summary –

Delaware 2 Temple 0 – The Owls 7-game winning streak came to an end with the loss at Delaware.    The Blue Hens put two past Owl goal keeper Shauni Kerkoff, who had 5 saves in the game, late in the second half.  Temple registered 4 shots on goal.

La Salle 3 Temple 2 (OT) – Jessika Kagan of La Salle scored the game winner 3:01 into the overtime to give the Explorers the victory.  The Explorers led 1 – 0 at halftime.  Kayla Cunningham tied the game for the Owls in the 65th minute.  La Salle took the lead back, but Temple tied it again with 10:01 left in regulation off a corner kick by Alyssa Kirk.  Each team registered 13 shots.  The Owls had an 8 – 7 edge in shots on goal.

Next Game – 9/25 at Cincinnati

VILLANOVA WILDCATS 2 – 5 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Towson at Higgins Field, Lost 4 – 0 at #21 West Virginia

Summary –

Villanova 0 Towson 0 (2 OT) – The Wildcats had a 9 – 3 edge in shots, and had seven players register a shot on goal.  However, none could find the back of the net.  The best opportunity of the game came in the 74th minute when Villanova’s Victoria Gersh had a breakaway attempt stifled by Towson goal keeper Erin Quinn.  In the extra periods the Wildcats forced Quinn to make two saves.

#21 West Virginia 4 Villanova 0 – The Mountaineers held a 2 – 0 halftime lead then added two more in the second period.  Christina Camassa led the Wildcats with 2 shots, one on goal.  Villanova was outshot 23 – 2.
