Temple Opens AAC Season With A Big Win, Villanova Moves Up to # 5

TEMPLE OWLS – Overall 3 – 1, 1 – 0 American Athletic Conference

Result – Won 36 – 10 at Connecticut

Temple 36 Connecticut 10 – In their conference opener the Owls looked to avenge a last season loss to Connecticut.  It was a close game as Temple led 7 – 3 at halftime, and exploded in the second half to gain the victory that puts the Cherry and White atop the American Athletic Conference standings.  In the first half Temple got the first score of the game on an interception return of 93 yards by Tavon Young.

In the second half the Owls got it going with a 42 yard touchdown pass from quarterback P.J. Walker to wide receiver Jalen Fitzpatrick who finished the day with 6 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown.  Walker followed with a 1-yard touchdown run.  Walker went 14-19 for 208 yards in the second half and for the game completed 21 of 29 passing attempts for 231 yards while adding 24 yards on the ground.

The defense took over with an 11-yard fumble recovery return for a touchdown by Praise Martin-Oguike.  Linebacker Tyler Matakevich added a safety.  Kicker Austin Jones finished the scoring with two field goals.  The defense has scored five times this season.

The Cherry and White are averaging 39 points per game while allowing 12.  There are only 4 FBS teams that average over 35 points and allow 12 points or less.  Those teams are Temple, TCU, Ole Miss, and Notre Dame.
