PHILLY COLLEGE SPORTS MEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

La Salle gets back-to-back 1 – 0 Wins, Saint Joseph’s Matches Last Year’s Win Total, Temple Wins AAC Opener

Week of September 23 – September 29, 2014 Games

DREXEL DRAGONS 3 – 4 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. Princeton at Vidas Field, Won 3 – 0 at FDU

Summary –

Princeton 1 Drexel 0 – A converted penalty kick in the 53rd minute by Thomas Sanner of Princeton was the only goal of the game.  The Dragons were outshot 6 – 1, but goal keeper Tyler Afflerbach kept the Tigers away except for the penalty kick.  Drexel had a good opportunity in the 85th minute, but a shot by Robert Liberatore from 20 yards out went just over the crossbar.

Drexel 3 FDU 0 – The Dragons scored a season high 3 goals to defeat the Knights of Farleigh Dickinson University.  Drexel got goals from Tristan Thompson, James Detweiler, and Joseph Rodriguez.  For each player it was their first goal of the season.  Tyler Afflerbach made 4 saves to record his fourth shutout of the season and the tenth of his career.

LA SALLE EXPLORERS 3 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Bucknell at McCarthy Stadium, Won 1 – 0 (OT) at Manhattan

Summary –

La Salle 1 Bucknell 0 – A goal by Joe Farrell in the 48th minute was enough to propel the Explorers past the Bison.  The goal was assisted by Jim Baker.  Goal Keeper Mike Burke recorded a career-high 7 saves facing 15 Bucknell shots.

La Salle 1 Manhattan 0 (OT) – The Explorers won their third straight getting a goal from Coleman Kennedy in the 97th minute.  The assists went to Joe Farrell and Mike Liska.  La Salle was credited with 22 shots and had a 10 – 4 edge in corner kicks.  Mike Kirk recorded 4 saves to get his second straight shutout.

Joe Farrell won the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week while Mike Kirk was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

PENN QUAKERS– 3 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 6 – 2 at #7 Penn State

Summary –

#7 Penn State 6 Penn 2 – A Penn goal in the 15th minute ended a streak of 674:52 of action in State College without Penn State conceding a goal.  The score came off the foot of Duke Lacroix that tied the game at one.  The Nittany Lions scored the next three goals.  Alec Neumann also netted his fourth goal of the season to get the Red and Blue to within two, but Penn State connected on the final two goals of the game.  PSU led 16 – 15 in shots.  The Lions goal keeper Andrew Wolverton made 8 saves.

SAINT JOSEPH’S HAWKS 5 – 1 – 3 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Siena, Tied 0 – 0 vs. NJIT at Sweeney Field

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 1 Siena 0 – A Jake Nelson penalty kick in the 86th minute was the difference in the victory at Hawk Hill.  SJU has an 18 – 10 edge in shots.  Hawk goal keeper Bobby Edwards made 3 first half saves to get his first collegiate shutout.  With their fifth win of the season SJU equaled their total number of wins from last season.

Saint Joseph’s 0 NJIT 0 (2OT) – Freshman goal keeper Edwards made a career-high 6 saves for Saint Joe’s to lead his team in a scoreless draw.  The Hawks owned a 20 – 12 edge in shots and had a 7 – 4 lead in corner kicks, but could not solve Christian Foust who also made 6 saves in the contest.

Bobby Edwards was named the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.

TEMPLE OWLS 2 – 6 – 1 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 3 – 0 vs. #23 Delaware, Won 2 – 0 vs. Cincinnati at Ambler

Summary –

#23 Delaware 3 Temple 0 – The Blue Hens too k a 1 – 0 halftime lead then netted two in the second half to preserve the victory.  Temple goal keeper Dan Scheck made 6 saves in the game.  Delaware owned a 12 – 8 edge in shots, 9 – 1 on goal.

Temple 2 Cincinnati 0 – The Owls ended a three game losing streak and won their conference opener by shutting out the Bearcats.  Temple got goals from Jared Martinelli, who scored in the 8th minute, and Chris Wilson just under four minutes into the second half.  The Cherry and White owned an 18 – 10 edge in shots, 9 – 2 in shots on goal.

Next Game – 10/4 at USF

VILLANOVA WILDCATS 3 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 (OT) at Lehigh, Lost 1 – 0 vs. Creighton at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary –

Villanova 1 Lehigh 0 (OT) – The Wildcats picked up their first road win of the season when Max Kroschwitz converted a penalty kick at the 97:54 mark.  Each team had 17 shots.  Nova goal keeper Will Steiner made 6 saves to earn the shutout.

Creighton 1 Villanova 0 – The Wildcats dropped their conference opener as Lucas Stauffer connect4d on a header in the 16th minute for the Blue Jays.  Steiner made 6 saves facing 22 Creighton shots.  Villanova 9 shots, 4 on goal against Blue Jays goal keeper Connor Sparrow.
