PHILLY COLLEGE SPORTS MEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

Penn Wins Soccer Six Title

Week of September 30 – October 6, 2014 Games

DREXEL DRAGONS 4 – 5 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. Seton Hall, Lost 3 – 1 at William & Mary

Summary –

Drexel 2 Seton Hall 0 – Drexel concluded their non-conference schedule with a win.  Michele Pataia and Matthew DiDomenico scored for the Dragons, both in the first half.  Goal Keeper Tyler Afflerbach made four saves in recording his fifth shutout of the season and the eleventh of his career.

William & Mary 3 Drexel 1 – The Tribe struck or two first half goals and made it stand to take the conference opener for both squads.  William & Mary added a third goal in the 77th minute.  Jameson Detweiler scored the Drexel goal, his second of the season.

Next Game – 10/8 at Northeastern

LA SALLE EXPLORERS 3 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 3 – 0 at Villanova, Won 1 – 0 (OT) vs. LIU Brooklyn at McCarthy Stadium

Summary –

Villanova 3 La Salle 0 – Villanova scored first in the 13th minute as Willis Griffith put the ball into the upper left corner of the net, then just four minutes later Dennis Aaron made it 2 – 0 for the Wildcats.  Hayden Harr concluded the scoring in the 56th minute of play.  Villanova goal keeper Will Steiner made 7 saves to record the shutout.  Mike Kirk made 5 saves for La Salle.  Each team recorded 17 shots.  The Wildcats put 8 on goal while the Explorers had 7.  Joe Farrell of La Salle and Sean Sheridan of Villanova each had 4 shots.

La Salle 1 LIU Brooklyn 0 (OT) – The Explorers won their third 1 – 0 game in their last four outings.  This win came via a penalty kick by Matt Robinson in the 94th minute.   Goal Keeper Mike Kirk recorded his third shutout of the season.  He made a diving stop in the 93rd minute to keep his team in the game.

Next Game – 10/10 vs. Fordham at McCarthy Stadium

PENN QUAKERS – 5 – 4 – 0 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsWon 2 – 1 (2 OT) vs. Saint Joseph’s at Rhodes Field, Won 1 – 0 at Cornell

Penn 2 Saint Joseph’s 1(2 OT)  – The win gave Penn the 2014 Philadelphia Soccer Six crown, their ninth title in the Soccer Six.  The winning goal came in the 103rd minute off the foot of Philadelphia native Alec Neumann who also assisted on the goal by Duke Lacroix.  Neumann headed the ball inside the left pipe for the game winner.  Emmanuel Temeh scored for the Hawks in the second half off a bicycle kick.  Penn goal keeper Max Polkinhorne made a key save in the second half diving to his left to stop a hip-high shot by SJU’s Mark Coville.

Neumann was named the Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week while Polkinhorne earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Penn 1 Cornell 0 – In a matchup of the previous two Ivy League champions, the 2013 title holder Penn Quakers earned the victory in Ithaca.  Forrest Clancy of the Red and Blue scored his first career goal in the 58th minute curling in a free kick.  Max Polkinhorne made 5 saves to post his third shutout of the season.

Next Game – 10/11 vs. Columbia at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S HAWKS 6 – 2 – 3 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (2 OT) at Penn, Won 1 – 0 at UMass

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 1 UMass 0 – The Hawks won their Atlantic 10 opener on the road.  On a rain soaked field Mark Coville scored the lone goal of the game in the 86th minute.  Emmanuel Temeh fed Coville who went in on a breakaway to net the game winner.  Goal Keeper Bobby Edwards made 3 saves to register his 4th shutout of the season.  The Hawks had a commanding 18 – 8 edge in shots.

Next Game – 10/12 at Fordham

TEMPLE OWLS 2 – 7 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 3 – 0 at #22 USF

Summary –

#22 USF 3 Temple 0 – The South Florida Bulls forward Tyler Blackwood scored three goals in a nine minute span to earn the victory.  The Owls were outshot by a 21 – 5 margin and did not force the USF goal keepers to make a save.  Felipe Liborio had 2 shots for the Cherry and White.

Next Game – 10/8 vs. UCF at the Ambler Sports Complex

VILLANOVA WILDCATS 5 – 4 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. La Salle, Won 4 – 0 vs. DePaul both at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary –

Villanova 4 DePaul 0 – At the dedication of the Higgins Soccer Complex the Wildcats got two goals each from Aaron Dennis and Hayden Harr to win their first Big East game of the season.  Both players were also credited with an assist.  Christopher Bared assisted on the first goal by Dennis.  The Wildcats had a commanding 16 – 2 advantage in shots.  Goal Keeper Will Steiner earned the shutout making two saves.

Hayden Harr was named the Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week.  Christopher Bared was named the Rookie of the Week.

Next Game – 10/7 at Stony Brook
