PHILADELPHIA, PA. 12/22/2014 – Playing their most complete game of the year the Temple Owls led from start to finish winning easily over the 10th ranked Kansas Jayhawks 77 – 52 at the Wells Fargo Center. It was the two years ago when the Owls defeated third ranked Syracuse, and it was the sixth time that a Fran Dunphy coached team defeated a top ten team.
“It was our night offensively and I think we played some pretty good defense,” said Temple Coach Fran Dunphy.
The Cherry and White did it on offense and defense. For the game the Owls shot a blistering 58%, 69% (18 – 26) in the second half alone. It was a season-best shooting percentage for the Cherry and White. Meanwhile the Jayhawks could make 32% (18 – 56) from the floor, and made 8 of 31 shots after halftime. Temple forced 17 turnovers and had a 21 – 4 advantage in points off turnovers against the young Kansas team.
From the beginning the Owls took control leading by 35 – 25 at halftime. The nationally ranked Jayhawks cut the deficit to 6 points early in the second half, but Temple responded with a 18 – 5 run to take control. The lead grew to as many as 30 points.
Temple senior guard Will Cummings scored a team-high 19 points. Junior guard Quenton DeCosey scored 18 points making 7 of 9 from the field. Senior guard Jesse Morgan added 17 points, and junior forward Jaylen Bond took down 10 rebounds. For Kansas guard Frank Mason III posted a game-high 20 points.
The Owls (8 – 4) have won 4 of their last 5 games, and will complete the non-conference portion of the schedule taking on Delaware State on December 28. The American games begin on New Year’s Eve with a road game against the defending national champion Connecticut Huskies.
