There will be a special presentation made tonight at halftime of the St.Joe’s – Rhode Island game.  The recipient will be Ed Garrity, who on February 4, 1953, scored 40 points in a game at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse (now Hagan Arena), the most ever by a Hawk player at home.  Ironically, the opponent that memorable night was also Rhode Island, which makes this occasion even more nostalgic for Garrity, a 5-11 lightening quick guard who came to St. Joe’s from West Catholic.  It’s a well-deserved tribute to the 83-year old former Hawk, who set a record that still stands after 62 years.

Here’s some pretty interesting basketball connections: John Rigsby, son of former Villanova stalwart Whitey, is a 6-2-guard at  powerhouse Archbishop Carroll. The team is coached by Paul Romanczuk, an excellent player at Penn; whose father Doug, was a very solid performer for Drexel.  Paul Romanczuk is the son-in-law of Doug Collins, who we all know, and Doug’s son Chris is the head coach at Northwestern.  Somehow it all ties together.

Just an opinion, but right now if I had to pick the city’s top three MVP’s, my choices would be DeAndre’ Bembry, Damion Lee, and Garrett Kerr.
