DePaul Gets By Villanova In Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament

#2 DePaul 58 #3 Villanova 55 –  Villanova guard Caroline Coyer scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 9 rebounds, but the Wildcats fell to the DePaul Blue Demons in the Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinal round.  Forward Emily Leer added 12 points in the contest.  Villanova posts a 19 – 13 record and await  selection for post-season play.

The Wildcats took a 51 – 49 lead with 6:12 to play on a three-pointer by Samantha Wilkes.  DePaul answered with a three by Brittany Hrynko and Villanova could not regain the lead.  Coyer cut the deficit to 57 – 55 at the 29 second mark.

Megan Podkowa led the Blue Demons with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Hrynko scored 13 points and Chanise Jenkins added 11 points.

DePaul had a 36 – 32 advantage in rebounds, more telling was a 12 – 6 edge off the offensive glass.  Neither team shot the ball particularly well from beyond the arc.  Villanova shot 4 of 15 from deep while DePaul was 5 of 20.

DePaul moves on to the Big East final on Tuesday to face top seeded Seton Hall who defeated St. John’s 72 – 60 in the other semifinal game.
