Davidson Defeats La Salle At The Buzzer In Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal

#1 Davidson 67 #9 La Salle 66 – The game seemed to be going the Explorers way, but a layup attempted that bounced on the rim and went through the basket by the Wildcats Tyler Kalinoski, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, capped the comeback and eliminated the Explorers.

“Both teams deserved to win,” said La Salle Coach Dr. John Giannini.  “I was surprised that shot went in. I thought that we had them out of rhythm a little bit and it looked like the ball was thrown towards the rim and not shot as well as they normally do, and it just kind of took a couple bounces and went in. ”

La Salle led by as many as 18 points in the first half.  Davidson did not have an answer for Steve Zack, who scored a career-high 24 points.  The senior center shot 11 for 17 and took down 15 rebounds.  Fellow senior front-liner Jerrell Wright scored 19 points making 8 of 9 from the floor.  The Explorers also held the Wildcats three-point shooting in check early, but in the second half the three’s went in with more frequency.

Still, La Salle led by 9 points with 4:45 to play., but Davidson would end the game on a 10 – 0 run.  With 16 seconds to play and the Explorers up by a point Jordan Price missed on a three-pointer that gave the Wildcats the deciding final possession.

Senior D.J. Peterson scored in double figures for La Salle with 11 points.  Jack Gibbs led all scorers with 22 points and Kalinoski had 18 for Davidson.  Brian Sullivan and Jordan Braham each contributed 12 points.

La Salle ends the season with a 17 – 16 record.
