My choice for the winner of the Wooden award given to the nation’s outstanding player, would be Virginia’s 6-5 senior guard Malcolm Brogdon.  Not a whole lot of flash, but as complete a player as you will find anywhere, and the clear-cut leader of the 4th ranked team in the country.  He leads the Cavaliers in scoring (18.5), minutes played, and made three-pointers (61) and makes 88% of his free throws.  He’s also second in assists, rebounds and steals, and is a terrific defender.  His smarts on the court should be no surprise, since he passed up the NBA last year in order to gain his master’s degree in public policy.  I know Ben Simmons is the favorite, and Buddy Hield is having an excellent season, but my choice is Brogdon, who could very well take Virginia to the Final Four.

Here is a suggestion to our good friends at the NCAA: Because of violations (SMU), and stupidity (Louisville), neither of these schools will be in the tournament this season.  Since the players were not involved in these misdeeds, but are still being unfairly punished, how about sponsoring a game between the two institutions so at least the seniors could show their talents.  All of the proceeds could go to charity, and the schools would not get a penny.  You could call it the Redemption Game, and there is a good chance you could have one every year.

A big part of Villanova’s success has been the play of Kris Jenkins.  After averaging 6.3 last season he’s at 11.9 this year….We don’t see much of BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth but look for him in the NCAA’s.  He’s had four triple-doubles so far this season, 11 in his career….  Saint Joe’s is at St. Bonaventure tonight, looking for revenge from a home loss to the Bonnies last month…. Also tonight La Salle hosts St. Louis.  The Explorers Jordan Price continues to lead the Big 5 in scoring.(18.9 points per game)…. Tomorrow night night Temple welcomes Memphis in a must-win setting. The Owls were defeated by the Tigers on January 13…. On Saturday, before what will likely be the biggest crowd ever to see a college game at the Wells Fargo, Georgetown visits Villanova.
