Saint Joseph’s Falls On Late Try At CRC

CHESTER, PA. 6/5/2016 – The Saint Joseph’s Hawks fell victim to a last second penalty try by the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Plate Quarterfinal 19 – 12 at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship at Talen Energy Stadium.

With the score tied at 12 and the clock running down, South Carolina had the ball on their side of the field.  The ball looked like it was going out of bounds, but it skidded along the sideline to stay in play.  They kicked it deep and in the ensuing chase the SC player going for the ball was obstructed from behind.  The Gamecocks were awarded a last second penalty try and Nick Skalka converted and will move on to the Plate semifinal round.

Christian Harrell scored twice for South Carolina.  His first came after Saint Joe’s opened the scoring at 5:50 in the first half on a try by George Harris.  The second goal by Harrell tied the game at 12 in the second half.

Saint Joseph’s got a try by Greg McTiernan after the halftime horn that gave his team a 12 – 7 lead at intermission.

The loss ends the tournament run for Saint Joe’s who finish with two wins and two losses.
