 Jorge Gomez-Sanchez Posts An 11-Point Week, Philadelphia Soccer Six Sees Two Overtime Thrillers

Week of September 12 – 19, 2016

DREXEL 1 – 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 3 – 2 (OT) vs. Temple at Vidas Field, Lost 2 – 0 at Northeastern

Summary –  The Dragons captured their first win of the season when Carlos Cuevas, the Soccer Six Co-Rookie of the Week, scored the game-winner in the 96th minute against city rival Temple.  The three goals were the highest scoring output for Drexel this season.  The Dragons fell behind twice, but got the equalizer each time.  Other Dragons goals were by Colin McGlynn and Ilai Shvika.  However, Drexel could not keep the momentum going dropping their CAA opener getting shutout in Boston.  The Dragons had nine shots, three on goal.

Next Game – 9/20 vs. Princeton at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 5 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 at James Madison, Lost 1 – 0 (2 OT) at Penn

Summary  – The Explorers played in back-to-back 1 – 0 games on the road winning at James Madison, losing at Penn.  Colman Kennedy scored the lone La Salle goal and Mike Kirk posted shutout number four in Virginia.  In the Penn game Kirk made 10 saves on 21 shots, but Sam Hefter scored in the 108th minute for the win.

Next Game – 9/20 at Lafayette

PENN – 1 – 1 – 3 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsWon 1 – 0 (2 OT) vs. La Salle at Rhodes Field

Summary – The Quakers recorded 21 shots, 11 on goal, but it took nearly 108 minutes before Sam Hefter, Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Rookie of the Week, tallied the game-winner off a cross by Sam Wancowicz from the right side.  Penn limited La Salle to 7 shots.  Goalie Etan Mabourakh was credited with 3 saves in the shutout, and was named the Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week.

Next Game – 9/20 at Lehigh

SAINT JOSEPH’S  2 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Hartford, Lost 1 – 0  vs. Navy at Sweeney Field

Summary –  The Hawks, much like their Atlantic 10 city member Explorers of La Salle, split a pair of 1 – 0 games over the week.  Mori Dane netted the game-winner at Hartford in the 63rd minute.  It was the second consecutive shutout for goalie Greg O’Connell .  The streak ended at home when Eric Bean scored for Navy in the 34th minute.  Bean put the ball on net on a header off a corner kick by Sam Bascom.

Next Game – 9/20 vs. Villanova at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 5 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (2 OT) at Drexel, Won 4 – 0 at Fairfield

Summary – Owls forward Jorge Gomez-Sanchez scored five goals over the two games.  He registered a hat trick against Fairfield.  Over the week Gomez-Sanchez had 5 goals and posted 11 points, and earned the Philadelphia Soccer Six and American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.  The senior forward also stands currently as the national leader in goals per game with 1.29.  Temple found the back of the net six times, but came away with a split.

Next Game – 9/24 at UConn

VILLANOVA 3 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (OT) vs. Butler at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – A goal in the 96th minute lifted Butler past Villanova in the Big East opener for each team.  The winning goal came from David Goldsmith off a header and it was his fifth point of the game.  Twice the Wildcats would battle back from a one goal deficit on goals by Zach Zandi and Lucas Hodges.  The last time was at the 71:01 mark.  The Bulldogs had a 27 – 15 edge in shots.  Villanova goalie Will Steiner made 5 saves.
