Saint Joe’s Streak Continues, Another Overtime For Penn, Villanova Gets A Big East Win

Week of September 19 – 26, 2016

DREXEL 1 – 5 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Princeton at Vidas Field, Lost 5 – 0 at Penn

Summary –  It was a tough week for the Dragons against Ivy league competition.  The Dragons did not find the back of the net in either contest.  Colin McGlynn and Armin Efendic put shots on the goal, but did not cross the line.

Next Game – 9/28 vs. Delaware at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 5 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Lafayette, Lost 2 – 1 (OT) vs. UMBC

Summary  – The Explorers dropped a pair of 2 – 1 decisions.  La Salle took a lead at Lafayette but that advantage was erased by the Leopards with the winner scored in the 82nd minute.  Colman Kennedy scored both La Salle goals giving him 4 for the season.  Mike Kirk made 7 saves against UMBC shots on goal.

Next Game – 10/1 vs. Saint Louis

PENN –2 – 1 – 4 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsTied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at. Lehigh, Won 5 – 0 vs. Drexel at Rhodes Field

Summary – The Red and Blue went to overtime for the fifth time in six games.  That streak ended against City Six rival Drexel.  Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week Alec Neumann recorded a first-half hat trick in the University City Derby.  Neumann leads the team with 8 points on 4 goals.  Neumann had 2 shots in the draw at Lehigh.  Austin Kuhn scored the game-evening goal in the 86th minute.  The Quakers had a goal in the 106th minute that was called back due to an offside call.  Ivy League play starts for the Red and Blue.

Next Game – 10/2 at Cornell

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Villanova at Sweeney Field, Won 2 – 0 at Central Connecticut State

Summary –  It was a Soccer Six classic when the Hawks and the Wildcats battled to a scoreless draw.  It was the third career shutout by SJU’s goalie Greg O’Connell against Villanova.  He added his fourth in New Britain, CT to earn a share of the Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award.  Saint Joe’s is unbeaten in four of the last five games.

Next Game – 9/27 at St. John’s

TEMPLE 5 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 1 – 0 at Connecticut

Summary – The AAC season opened for the Owls with a loss at Connecticut.  Temple and UConn each had 5 shots on goal, but only one which was by the Huskies found the back of the net.  The goal came in the 64th minute by Abodou Thiam.

Next Game – 9/27 at Penn State

VILLANOVA 4 – 3 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Saint Joseph’s, Won 2 – 1 at Marquette

Summary – Jacob Anderson scored two goals at Marquette, the game-winner coming in the 87th minute in the come from behind win in a Big East match.  Anderson garnered the Rookie of the Week award in the Philadelphia Soccer Six.  In the draw on Hawk Hill Zach Zandi had two opportunities to get the game-winner, but his shots were tipped away by the Hawk goal keeper.  Will Steiner posted a shutout against Saint Joe’s to be named the Soccer Six Co-Defender of the Week.
