Saint Joseph’s Sets Program Record For Best Start In A Season

Week of September 20 – 27, 2016 Games

DREXEL 5 – 5 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. Hofstra, Lost 1 – 0 vs. Northeastern both at Vidas Field

Summary – The CAA season opened for the Dragons who came away with a split over the weekend series.  Drexel got off to a good start against Hofstra when Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausboll scored in the 9th minute.  Other goals came from Vanessa Kara and Shaelyn McCarty.  However, the hosts could not find the back of the net and fell in overtime to the Huskies.  Hannah Rosenblatt converted a penalty kick with 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Northeastern the win.  Dragons goalie Christina Ogunsami made a career-high 10 saves in the match.

Next Game – 9/30 at James Madison

LA SALLE 2 – 6 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Idle

Summary – The Explorers earned some time off.  La Salle will resume play at Massachusetts on Thursday.

Next Game – 9/29 vs. Massachusetts at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 4 – 2 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 1 – 0 vs. Harvard at Rhodes Field

Summary – The Quakers gave up a first half penalty kick that stood up to give the Harvard Crimson a 1 – 0 win the Ivy opener for both schools.  Harvard has won four games in a row.  Midge Purce converted the kick.  Penn goalie Kitty Qu made four saves.  The Red and Blue outshot the Crimson 13 – 9.

Next Game – 9/30 at Cornell

SAINT JOSEPH’S  7 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Result – Won 4 – 2 at LIU Brooklyn

Summary – The Hawks have not lost in over a month and their seven game unbeaten streak continued with a win in Brooklyn.  This sets a new program record for best start to a season eclipsing the 6 – 2 – 1 mark set by the 1997 team.  Saint Joe’s led at intermission by a 2 – 0 score.  The Hawks start conference play on Thursday.

Next Game – 9/29 vs. George Washington at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 3 – 7 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 American

Results – Idle

Summary – After three games last week the Owls will resume play on Thursday hosting their conference rival the Tigers of Memphis.

Next Game – 9/29 vs. Memphis at the Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA  2 – 8 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Butler at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – The Wildcats dropped their Big East opener.  Butler got a goal in the 20th minute and added insurance on a second half penalty kick.  Villanova had 16 shots, 8 were on goal forcing Hannah Luedtke to make the saves to record the shutout.  Emily Kuefler, Kristin Barbour and Sam Depinho were credited with 2 shots on goal each.

Next Game – 9/29 at Georgetown
