Penn – Ivy Champs! Villanova Wins The Battle of the Blue And Earns FCS Bid, Temple Registers A Shutout

Games of November 19th, 2016

TEMPLE – Overall 8 –  3, 6 – 1  American Athletic Conference

Result – Won 31 – 0 at Tulane

Summary –  The Temple defense registered back to back shutouts for the first time since 2011 blanking Tulane.  The Owls gave up 8 first downs and held the Green Wave to 142 yards of total offense, 24 in the air.  Tulane was able to convert only 1 of 10 third down chances.  Temple ranks third in the nation in total defense.  The offense held the ball for over 40 minutes.  Quarterback Phillip Walker completed 18 of 33 passes for 337 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Walker amassed 223 yards in the first half.  He was not intercepted.  The scoring tosses went to Ventell Bryant, who caught 9 passes for 168 yards both career-highs, and Jahad Thomas, a 42-yard strike.  Thomas had 2 touchdowns in the game and 16 for the season.  He opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run.  Freshman Isaiah Wright closed the scoring with a 22-yard burst.  The Cherry and White put up 553 yards of offense.  The running game accounted for 196 yards as nine Owls carried the ball.

#13  VILLANOVA – Overall 8 – 3, 6 – 2 CAA

Result – Won 41 – 10 at Delaware

Summary – Andy Talley coached his final regular season game, and it was a win.  The Wildcats won the Battle of the Blue for the ninth time in ten seasons dominating the Blue Hens.  Quarterback Zach Bednarczyk tied a career-high with 4 touchdown passes throwing for 195 yards completing 13 of 17.  Running back Matt Gudzak rushed for a career-best 121 yards scoring on the ground along with a 54-yard touchdown reception.  He had 194 all-purpose yards.  Ryan Bell hauled in two touchdown receptions and Changa Hodge caught the other.  The running game put up 277 yards.  Bednarczyk ran for 78 yards.  Javon White also crossed the goal line.  On defense Villanova held Delaware to 14 first downs and 277 total offensive yards.  The Cats Rasaan Stewart intercepted a pass.  Linebacker Ed Shockley had 9 tackles and a sack.  For Talley and the team, there is more work to do as Villanova earned a bid the FCS Championship.  The Wildcats will host Saint Francis in the opening round game.

PENN – Overall 7 –3, Ivy League 6 – 1

Result – Won 42 – 20 at Cornell

Summary –  For the second consecutive season the University of Pennsylvania is the Ivy League Champion.  Penn will share the crown with Princeton.  It is the 18th title for the Red and Blue, tied with Dartmouth for most among the Ivy programs.  Running back Tre Soloman led the offense with 173 rushing yards on 32 carries and 2 touchdowns.  He caught 3 passes for 36 yards.  Senior quarterback Alek Torgersen capped his career with 61 rushing yards scoring twice.  He completed 24 of 31 passes for 284 yards and a scoring toss to Christian Pearson.  Wide Receiver Justin Watson caught 11 passes for 106 yards giving him 89 for the year earning the Penn top-spot for single season receptions.  His 1,115 yards is a program record for single season receiving yards.  The Quakers had 527 yards of total offense.  Tackle Nick Demes recorded his first career touchdown taking a lateral from Torgersen scoring from 7-yards out.  On defense Penn intercepted three passes for the second consecutive week.
