PhillyCollegeSports.com Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

The Temple Backcourt  – Feyonda Fitzgerald and Alliya Butts – Fitzgerald scored 20 points, 14 in the first half when Temple established control in the game against Villanova.  Butts got it going in the second half scoring a game-high 27 points.  Fitzgerald handed out a game-best 8 assists.  Butts dished 5 assists.  The guard combo accounted for 47 points and 13 assists in the game where Temple clinched at least a share of the Big Five championship.

Games The Week of December 6 – 12, 2016

LA SALLE 6 – 4 Overall,  1 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results –   Won 58 – 56 (OT) at Penn, Won 68 – 61 vs. Fairfiled at the Gola Arena

Summary – The Explorers won a pair of come from behind games over the week.  La Salle got a basket from Amy Griffin with 3 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.  Adreanna Miller hit a three-pointer with a half second on the clock to lift the Explorers past Penn.  A late 5 – 0 late on the fourth quarter gave LSU control in the Fairfield win.  Over the week Griffin scored 44 points and took down 15 rebounds.  Miller had 18 in the win at Penn.  Jasmine Alston put up a stat line of 16 points, 17 assists, and 19 rebounds.

Next Game – 12/21/2016 – vs. Delaware State at the Gola Arena

PENN 4 – 4 Overall,  0 – 0 Ivy League,  0 – 2 Big Five

Results –  Lost 58 – 56 (OT) vs. La Salle at the Palestra, Won 47 – 44 at Richmond

Summary – The University of Pennsylvania lost late leads late in the fourth quarter and in overtime in the Big Five loss to La Salle.  The Quakers bounced back with a road win at Richmond that was sealed by a blocked shot by Michelle Nwokedi.  She scored 21 points and took down a career-best 20 rebounds.  Against La Salle Nwokedi scored 24 points and added 9 rebounds.  Penn has off until December 31 as they will take to the road with a trip to California.

Next Game – 12/31 at CSU – Northridge

SAINT JOSEPH’S 2 – 6 Overall, 0 –0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 73 – 71 (OT) at Central Michigan

Summary – The Hawks dropped a heart-breaker at Central Michigan who got a 3 by Presley Hudson with 2 seconds to play to send the game into an extra period.  Hudson haunted the Hawks again by converting a driving layup at the buzzer for the win.  SJU led by 12 with just 4 minutes left in regulation.  Alyssa Monaghan scored a career-high 20 points and Adashia Franklyn added 18 points.  Chelsea Woods extended her streak of scoring in double-digits to three games scoring 12 points.

Next Game – 12/13/2016 vs. NJIT at the Hagan Arena

TEMPLE 5 – 3,  Overall, 0 – 0 AAC, 3 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 71 – 65 at Hampton, Won 83 – 48 vs. Villanova


Summary – The Owls started the week with a loss at Hampton, but ended the week with a big win at Villanova which gave them at least a share of the Big Five Championship.  Feyonda Fitzgerald scored 20 points and added 8 assists in the win on the Main Line.  Alliya Butts added 27 points and 5 assists.  Ruth Sherrill and Donnaizha posted double-doubles in their first start of the season against the Wildcats.

Next Game – 12/15 at DePaul

VILLANOVA  4 – 5 Overall, 0 – 0 Big East, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 83 – 48 vs. Temple at the Pavilion

Next Game – 12/21 at Duke

DREXEL 4 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Idle

Summary –  The Dragons return to action hosting the Purple Eagles of Niagara at the DAC.
