Lindenwood Downs Saint Joseph’s In CRC

CHESTER, PA. 6/3/2017 – The Saint Joseph’s Hawks fell behind early, and despite a late rally the Lindenwood Lions downed the Hawks 29 – 12 in the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships.

Lindenwood put all three first half tries on the board on scores by Christian Rodriguez, Gio Falco, and Lorenzo Thomas to take a 19 – 0 lead into halftime.  The Thomas try came with no time on the clock.  In the second half Thomas and Chris Shoeman crossed the goal line within the first three minutes of the stanza to give Lindenwood a commanding 29 – 0 lead.

“A few bounces of the ball and a few miscues put us back on our heels,” said Saint Joseph’s Coach Yarusso.  “It’s hard to come back against quality teams, but I am proud of our guys effort against Lindenwood.  We put two tries in late and we hope those points will help us out.”

The Hawks would show their mettle as Connor McAuliffe scored with a minute to play.  The resulting kick put 7 points on the board for SJU.

Saint Joe’s got the ball, and with no time showing, they would get another try by Jimmy Wolfer, who scored in all three games on Saturday.  It might not be much in this game, but could give SJU some momentum heading into Sunday’s games.

“Absolutely,” Yarusso said.  “Our guys are disappointed but they are holding their heads up high. They know they can play better and hopefully we will bring that tomorrow.”

The Hawks finish pool play with a 1 – 2 record.  It is still to be decided if the team will play for the Bowl or Plate. What we do know is that there is more rugby to Saint Joe’s to play.

“It’s exciting for the guys,” said Yarusso.  “More than the hardware at the end , it’s for the team.  They guys want to play for each other and for our fans.  We’re looking to lick our wounds a little bit and get back at it tomorrow.”
