Villanova and Saint Joseph’s Post Conference Victories
Week of October 2 – 8, 2017
DREXEL 2 – 7 – 1 Overall, 1 – 2 – 1 CAA
Results – Lost 4 – 0 at Temple, Lost 3 – 0 at #16 UNCW
Summary – The Dragons could not get the offense going this week. They were blanked twice. At Temple they fell behind 12 seconds into the match and never recovered. Travelling to North Carolina Drexel found themselves outshot by a 17 – 1 margin. Goalie Jacob Jordan made 6 saves in each game.
Next Game – 10/11 vs. Hofstra at Vidas Field
LA SALLE 4 – 7 – 1 Overall, 0 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Lost 1 – 0 at Fordham, Lost 1 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Rhode Island at McCarthy Stadium
Summary – The Explorers outshot the opposition over the two games by a 34 – 19 margin, but could not get a goal dropping two 1 – 0 decisions to two teams nick-named the Rams. Jacob Bohm scored for Fordham in the 73rd minute. Rhode Island won it with a goal in the 104th minute by Stavros Zarokostas. La Salle will attempt to get their first Atlantic 10 win at home vs. George Washington on Wednesday.

PENN – 2 – 7 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 1 Ivy League
Results – Won 3 – 1 at Delaware, Lost 3 – 0 at #14 Columbia
Summary – The University of Pennsylvania snapped a three-game losing with the win at Delaware. Penn got goals from Erumuse Momoh, Jerel Blades, and Joe Swenson. The Quakers looked to sustain their momentum against the nationally-ranked Lions, but Columbia halted the win streak getting three second half goals.
Next Game – 10/14 vs. Dartmouth at Rhodes Field
SAINT JOSEPH’S 3 – 6 – 3 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Lost 3 – 2 (2 OT) at Dayton, Won 2 – 0 vs. George Mason at Sweeney Field
Summary – The Hawks were in Atlantic 10 battles this week and came away with a split. At Dayton Ben Zambatti and Eddie McCusker scored with McCusker getting the equalizer, and was named the Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week. Both Hawks scored their initial goals. But, the Flyers won it on a blast from Jonas Fjeldberg in the 93rd minute. The Hawks got their first conference win when Ben Cochran got his initial tally of the year. It was the strong goal tending by Greg O’Connell that keyed the victory as he turned in a career-high 9 saves.
Next Game – 10/11 vs. Massachusetts
TEMPLE 5 – 6 – 1 Overall, 1 – 2 – 0 AAC
Results – Won 4 – 0 vs. Drexel, Lost 2 – 1 vs. SMU both at Temple Sports Complex
Summary – The Owls earned their third straight win shutting out the Dragons. Alan Camacho Soto scored at the 12 second mark to get Temple started. Thibault Candia added another goal. Mark Grasela put the ball in the back of the net twice earning the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week award. Soto was named the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week. In conference play the Owls battled the SMU Mustangs to a tie late into the game, but Mauro Cichero won it for SMU at the 79:15 mark.
Next Game – 10/1 4 vs. Cincinnati at the Temple Sports Complex
VILLANOVA 6 – 6 – 0, 2 – 2 – 0 Big East
Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Princeton, Won 2 – 1 vs. Xavier at the Higgins Soccer Complex
Summary – In the game against Princeton it was the Tigers who scored in the minute to take control. In the Xavier game, it was Villanova who got the first goal. Lucas Hodges scored at the 42:02 mark to give the Wildcats a lead, and broke a 310 minute scoring drought. Christopher Bared scored the insurance goal in the 61st minute.
