PHILLY COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

 La Salle Gets A Season High 5 Goals, Temple Registers An American Win

Week of  October 9 – 15, 2017

DREXEL 2 – 9 – 1 Overall, 1 – 4 – 1 CAA

Results – Lost 3 – 1 vs. Hofstra, Lost 2 – 1 (OT) vs. College of Charleston both at Vidas Field

Summary –  The Dragons have lost four games in a row, but did break a scoreless streak against Hofstra when Laolu Daranijo scored his first collegiate goal.  It was the first score since September 30 vs. Northeastern.  Mathias Ebbesen added a goal in the Charleston game.  Over the week Drexel was outshot 39 – 18, 22 – 5 on goal forcing Jacob Jordan to make 17 saves.  Tucker Heffron scored the game winner for the Cougars 27 seconds into the overtime period.

Next Game – 10/17 vs. Lehigh at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 5 – 8 – 1 Overall, 1 – 4 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 5 – 3 vs. George Washington at McCarthy Stadium, Lost 2 – 0 at Massachusetts

Summary –  The Explorers had their largest scoring game putting 5 across the goal line against GW.  Matt Robinson registered a hat trick, and was named the Soccer Six Player of the Week.  He now has 7 goals for the season, and is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in goals scored.  Pat McCarthy scored twice, the game winner at 88:18.  Four goals were scored in the last nine minutes of the contest, 3 – 1 for La Salle.  The offensive eruption did not continue against UMass as Joe Hansen had the only Explorers shot on goal.

Next Game – 10/18 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 2 – 8 – 1 Overall, 0 – 2 – 1 Ivy League

Results –  Lost 4 – 0 vs. Dartmouth at Rhodes Field

Summary – The University of Pennsylvania won the shot battle and had a time of possession advantage.  However, Penn lost the most important stat; goals scored.  Dartmouth had 2 scores in the last 10 minutes.   The Quakers next game will be in the Soccer Six when they host Villanova.

Next Game – 10/17 vs. Villanova at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 7 – 4 Overall, 1 – 2 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 2 – 2 (2 OT) vs. Massachusetts at Sweeney Field, Lost 1 – 0 at Fordham

Summary –  The Hawks played 200 minutes of soccer over the week, but came away with a draw and a loss.  Ben Cochran broke a scoreless tie against the Minutemen with a goal in the 61st minute.  His header marked the second time in two games where he got the scoring started in being named the Soccer Six Defender of the Week.  Isaac Agyapong registered his initial collegiate goal, assisted by David Grana who was the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.  At Fordham a goal by the Rams in the 25th minute was the decider.  Goalie Greg O’Connell made 10 saves over the span of games.  He now has 138 career saves and is closing in on 8th place in program history for saves needing 5 more.  Saint Joe’s is in 9th place in the Atlantic 10, one place out of a playoff spot.

Next Game – 10/18 at La Salle

TEMPLE 6 – 6 – 1 Overall, 2 – 2 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. Cincinnati at the Temple Sports Complex

Summary – The Owls got a conference win.  Joonas Jokinen put home a penalty kick, then in the 66th minute Hermann Doerner scored his first goal of the season that was the insurance goal Temple needed.  Mark Grasela got the assist.  The Cherry and White led in shots 13 – 7.

Next Game – 10/1 7 vs. NJIT at the Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 6 – 7 – 0, 2 –  3 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. #9 Georgetown at Talen Energy Stadium

Summary – The Wildcats took on the nationally ranked Hoyas at Talen Energy Stadium.  Georgetown took a 1 – 0 lead on a goal by Kyle Zapjec.  Villanova took control of the play afterwards.  Zach Zandi appeared to beat the goalie, but the ball hit the post and bounced away in the 58th minute.  The visitors got the insurance goal at 78:13 when Zach Knudson took a pass behind the defense and scored.
