Saint Joe’s Gets Only Philly Win, Penn Plays Another Overtime Game, Drexel and Villanova Suffer Conference Opener Losses

Week of September 10 – 16, 2018

DREXEL 4 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 3 – 0 vs. James Madison at The Vidas Athletic Complex

Summary – The Dragons suffered their first loss of the season in their initial CAA game of the season to the James Madison Dukes.  The first goal by JMU came just over six minutes into the game.  It ended a scoreless streak of 244:13 for Drexel goalie Stephen Kopsachilis.  Mathias Ebbesen had four of the eight shots managed by the Dragons.

Next Game – 9/18 vs. Bucknell at The Vidas Athletic Complex

LA SALLE 2 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at. Lafayette, Lost 1 – 0 at Robert Morris

Summary – The Explorers suffered their fourth straight loss, all via shutouts as they fell twice over the week.  La Salle were on the road and now have two road defeats.  The Explorers will have a Soccer Six match at Villanova on Wednesday.

Next Game – 9/19 at Villanova

PENN – 2 – 1 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsTied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Lehigh

Summary – For the fourth time in five games the University of Pennsylvania went into overtime.  Scott Forbes had 6 saves in the match to record his third shutout in five games.  Forbes was the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week.  Forbes has a city-best 0.72 goals against average.

Next Game – 9/21 at Marist

SAINT JOSEPH’S  4 – 3 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 0 vs Navy at Sweeney Field, Lost 2 – 0 at Manhattan

Summary – The Hawks had two 2 – nil games.  One was a win, the other a loss.  It was the first win over Navy in program history, and the lone win for a Philly team this week.  Leon Marcic the first goal for the second time in three games and has a total of 8 points over the year.  He has four goals over the season.  Ritchie Barry netted his second goal of the year, and has 6 points this season.  Barry was given the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week award.  Goalie Jason Boehm got his first career shutout making 4 saves against Navy and was the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week..  The Hawks fell to 1 – 3 on the road when the Jaspers got two second half scores.

Next Game – 9/19 vs. VMI at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 2 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (OT) at Princeton, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Duquesne

Summary – The Owls played two overtime games this week, and have four straight games that have gone into extra time.  Temple got a loss and a tie over the span.  Justin Hahn tied the game in the 73rd minute, but 25 minutes later the Tigers got the win.  The Owls fared a little better in Pittsburgh getting the equalizer by Lukas Fernandez in the 87th minute.  It was the first collegiate goal for Fernandez.

Next Game – 9/21 vs. Central Florida at the Temple Soccer Complex

#13 VILLANOVA 4 – 2 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 3 – 0 at Marquette

Summary – The Wildcats dropped their opening game in the Big East at Marquette.  The Golden Eagles got a goal in the 28th minute, then added two more late.  The stats were even as Villanova had a 14 – 12 edge in shots, but trailed 8 – 6 in shots on goal.  Evan Vare recorded 2 shots on goal for Nova.  Soccer Six action awaits Villanova when they host La Salle on Wednesday.
