Saint Joseph’s Clinches Playoff Spot, Penn Posts Shut Out Number 10

Week of October 9 – 16, 2018

DREXEL 5 – 6 – 5 Overall, 2 – 4 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (2 OT) vs. Hofstra at Vidas Field, Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Towson

Summary – The Dragons are hanging on to the 6th spot in the Colonial, the last playoff seed, despite a loss and a tie over the week. Against the Pride Lauren Currey scored twice, her second goal of the game tied it in the 84th minute sending the game to extra time.  Hofstra scored in the second overtime in a steady rain.  Libby Baeza made 6 saves against Hofstra and had 5 at Towson, one off a penalty kick.  Drexel out shot Towson 31 – 10, 15 – 6 on goal.  Shaelyn McCarty had 9 shots, 4 on goal.  None crossed the line for either team.  The Dragons are 1-point ahead in the race for 6th place.  They face a stern test against 1st place Northeastern on the road.

LA SALLE 8 – 6 – 1 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (OT) at Dayton, Lost 1 – 0 at Fordham

Summary – The Explorers dropped both road games of the week.  Madison Bower scored the only goal for La Salle.  She got it on a penalty kick 3 minutes into the second half.  Dayton was the beneficiary of two La Salle own goals. Fordham scored in the 54th minute, a header off a corner kick.  The Explorers are 1-point behind Dayton for 8th place in the Atlantic 10 standings.

Next Game – 10/18 at George Mason

PENN – 10 – 1 – 1 Overall, 3 – 0 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsWon 1 – 0 at Dartmouth

Summary – The University of Pennsylvania knocked off another Ivy unbeaten foe with a win in New Hampshire.  Megan Lloyd scored at the 50:31 mark for the winner, her first career goal. Emma Loving got the assist.  It was shutout number 10 for Penn this season.  Goal keeper Kitty Qu has 18, the most in program history.  The Red and Blue remain unbeaten in their last 9 games.  Penn and Harvard remain tied for 1st place in the Ancient Eight standings.

Next Game – 10/20 at Yale

SAINT JOSEPH’S  11 – 4 – 2 Overall, 6 – 2 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 3 – 1 vs. George Washington, Won 5 – 0 at Rhode Island

Summary – The Hawks clinched an Atlantic 10 playoff berth.  SJU scored 8 goals in the week’s sweep.  Five players scored goals with Dakota Mills, Hannah Racis, and Morgan Bower getting a pair of goals.  Saint Joe’s has a four game winning streak.  They are in 4th place in the A10 which would get the Hawks a home game in the conference quarterfinal round.

Next Game – 10/18 at Fordham

TEMPLE 6 – 8 – 1 Overall, 2 – 3 – 1 AAC

Results – Tied 2 – 2 (2 OT) at Cincinnati, Lost 1 – 0 at ECU

Summary – The Owls got a draw after a week off, then dropped a one-goal decision over the two-game road trip.  Gabriela Johnson got a goal to tie the Cincy game and took the lead less than 10 minutes later when Emma Wilkins scored.  The Bearcats tied it up in the 75th minute.  In Carolina the Pirates got the winner in the 53rd minute.  Temple ends the season with a three-game conference home stand.  The Owls are 2-points away from earning an American playoff spot.

Next Game – 10/18 vs. Tulsa at The Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 9 – 6 – 0 Overall, 3 – 3 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. Creighton at The Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – When the Wildcats lost it allowed the Blue Jays to move into a tie for fifth place with them in the Big East.  But each team is but one-point out of the third spot.  Creighton scored in the 55th minute when Taryn Jakubowski converted a penalty kick.  Villanova had a 21 – 7 edge in shots, 7 – 4 on goal.  Chloe O’Neill led the Cats with 5 shots and Bri Austin added 4.  Next up is St. John’s in New York, a team that is tied for third place in the conference.  The game has big standings implications.
