Drexel Extends CAA Winning Streak

PHILADELPHIA, PA. 1/25/2019 – The Drexel Dragons extended their CAA winning streak to four games with a 76 – 53 win over the College of Charleston Cougars at the DAC, the first win at home in 2019. It was the highest point production of the season for the Dragons.

“It was a good, overall team win,” said Drexel Coach Denise Dillon. “We stuck together on both ends of the floor and we are happy with the offensive production, and we need to build on that.”

In an effective performance on both sides of the ball, Drexel made 53.8% from the floor (28 of 52), and half of their three-pointers (9 of 18), while holding Charleston to 35.3%. The Dragons forced 20 Cougar turnovers which limited the opportunities for Charleston. All 12 Drexel players got into the game in the first half, six of them scored in the initial two quarters. Eight players had points overall.

“The team wants to see everyone get rewarded with playing time for all their hard work at practice,” Dillon said. “If you are focused and on point with what we are doing, you’ll be out on the floor. If you produce you’ll spend more time on the floor. This was needed especially with players picking up fouls, they came in and there wasn’t a drop-off.”

Mariah Leonard was one of those players who set a career-best with 9 points and in minutes with just under 23 minutes.

Bailey Greenberg led Drexel with 18 points. Aubree Brown added 14 points and 4 assists. Hannah Nihill scored 10 and registered a career-high handing out 8 assists. Maura Hendrixson added 15 points, one shy of her career-high, and tied her collegiate-best with 5 made three-pointers. Hendrixson has scored in double-figures in three of her last four games, and her confidence is growing.

“I am a lot more confident than I was at the beginning of the season shooting and having the ball in my hands,” Hendrixson said. “I am more comfortable.”

The issue was decided early when the Dragons took a 17 – 6 lead after one quarter and extended it to as many as 23 points before halftime

“It was really important because it was our first game back at home,” said Nihill. “We just wanted to get the win.”

Charleston was lead by Ericka Broughton and Darien Huff who had 12 points each. Deja Ford added 11. Aryn Eady scored 10 points and had a game-best 7 rebounds.

Drexel (12 – 5) has another CAA home game this weekend when the UNCW Seawolves comes to town. UNCW lost at Delaware and now are tied with Drexel with 4 – 2 records in conference, a half game behind league leaders Towson and James Madison.
