Philly Women’s College Soccer Week in Review – October 7th Edition

Conference play kicked into high-gear over the week. 

The University of Pennsylvania was the only team that went undefeated.  They continued the Ivy League portion of their schedule with a solid home win over Cornell to even their Ancient Eight record.  Lawton Sizzy had a goal and an assist.  Bruekelen Woodard scored two goals giving her a team-high 5 this season.  Mia Shenk found the back of the net.  Penn erased a 2 – 1 second half deficit with the offensive outburst.

Saint Joseph’s and La Salle recorded a win and a loss.  The Hawks defeated the Explorers 1 – 0 in their head to head matchup.  Dakota Mills netted the game winner.  The Hawks bounced back after a one-nil overtime loss at Saint Louis.  La Salle was coming off a 1 – 0 win over VCU on a goal by Emily Banashefski, the first of her career.

Villanova and Drexel had a draw and a loss over the week.  The Dragons lost at Delaware, then traveled to Elon and earned a double overtime tie.  Drexel benefitted from an own goal in North Carolina.  It was the third straight one-goal loss for the Dragons in the Blue Hens game.  The Wildcats played Big East foes.  Nova lost to Georgetown at home, then went to Indiana and got a draw.  Butler got the tying goal in the 86th minute.

Temple was on the road losing at Tulsa and at #9 Memphis.  The opposition scored early on the Owls.  The Golden Hurricane goal came in the 17th minute.  The Tigers got a score in the first minute, then got the other in the 13th minute.  Calrissa Larisey had both goals for Memphis.  Temple goal keeper Morgan Basileo made 14 saves over the road trip.

Drexel, Saint Joseph’s, and Temple are at home in their next games.  Towson visits the Dragons, Duquesne comes to Hawk Hill, and SMU rides to North Broad Street.  Penn goes to Columbia, La Salle has a road contest at Saint Louis, and Villanova rides to North Jersey to face Seton Hall.

All games are league game for the Philly schools.

Week of October 1 – 7, 2019

DREXEL 4 – 6 – 3 Overall, 0 – 3 – 1 CAA

Results – Lost 1 – 0 at Delaware, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Elon

Summary – Drexel gave up a first half goal at Delaware, and could not even the score.  At Elon both goals were scored in the first half.  The Dragons needed defense as they did not get a shot in both overtime periods.

Next Game – 10/10 vs. Towson

LA SALLE 7 – 5 – 1 Overall, 3 – 2 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. VCU, Lost 1 – 0 at Saint Joseph’s

Summary – The Explorers had won three in a row prior to the Saint Joe’s game.  Claudia Jenkins made 8 saves against the Rams in getting her third shutout.

Next Game – 10/13 at Saint Louis

PENN – 6 – 3 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Ivy League

Results– Won 4 – 2 vs. Cornell

Summary – The Quakers scored 4 or more goals in an Ivy League for the first time since 2012.  The Red and Blue outshot the Big Red 20 – 7, 9 to 5 on goal.

Next Game – 10/12 at Columbia

SAINT JOSEPH’S  5 – 7 – 1 Overall, 2 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (2 OT) at Saint Louis, Won 1 – 0 vs. La Salle

Summary – Mills has a team-high 3 goals and 6 points.  Goal Keeper Cameron Perrott made 10 saves at Saint Louis. 

Next Game – 10/13 vs. Duquesne

TEMPLE 3 – 7 – 3 Overall, 1 – 3 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 1 – 0 at Tulsa, Lost 2 – 0 at #9 Memphis

Summary – Although the offense was limited, the Temple played strong in goal with Basileo making 6 saves at Tulsa and 8 against the nationally-ranked Memphis team.

Next Game – 10/10 vs. SMU

VILLANOVA 5 – 4 – 3 Overall, 1 – 1 – 1

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Georgetown, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) at Butler

Summary – Villanova could not overcome two second half Georgetown goals.  At Butler Makayla Stadler found the back of the net in the 41st minute for Nova.  It looked like the Cats would hold on, but the Bulldogs scored with just over 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

Next Game – 10/10 at Seton Hall
