Philly Men’s College Soccer Week in Review – October 14th Edition

The city schools came up with two wins over the week and two draws in 10 games. The Red Storm of St. John’s went 2 – 0 against Soccer Six teams.

Temple and Villanova led the way with a win eace.  The Owls lost a tough 1 – 0 decision at #10 St. John’s giving up the goal by Tani Oluwaseyi on the 66th minute, despite outshooting the Red Storm 7 – 1 on goal.  Going on the road for a conference game at Memphis, goals by Sean Karani (his first) and Elias Hellgren Villegas provided the margin of victory.  Villegas scored the winner in the 106th minute to snap a 6-game winning streak for the Tigers.  The Wildcats played two nationally-ranked teams. Earlier in the week the Wildcats knocked off #17 James Madison 1 – 0 on a goal by Evan Vare in the 44th minute.  Villanova fell victim at St. John’s by a score of 4 – 0, the most goals given up by Nova this season.

The University of Pennsylvania earned a 1 – 1 draw at Columbia.  Joey Bhangdia scored his Ivy League leading 6th goal of the season.

Drexel got a 1 – 1 draw in the CAA game vs. Hofstra.  Francisco Rodrigues da Palma scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.  The Pride answered three minutes later.

Neither local Atlantic 10 schools could record a win in two tries each.  Saint Joseph’s did earn a 2 – 2 tie at Hartford, where Garrett Lyons scored both Hawks goals.  Hartford got the equalizer with just 55 seconds on the clock in regulation.  SJU was defeated 2- 0 by Rhode Island, and are looking for their first conference win this season.  La Salle fell twice, 3 – 2 at URI and at home against A10 leader Saint Louis.  In New England the Explorers were constantly fighting uphill.  The Rams got their last goal at the 88:25 mark.  Franc Gamiz Quer scored to pull La Salle to within one 34 seconds later.

This week features local games as Drexel visits Saint Joseph’s and Villanova travels to La Salle.  Temple has a home game against USF.  Penn goes to Maryland to face UMBC.
