Week of December 3 – December 9, 2012 Games

PhillyCollegeSports.com Player of the Week – Chatilla van Grinsven, Saint Joseph’s Forward – van Grinsven average 21.5 points per game over the week and added 11 rebounds per game.  Her weekly performance earned van Grinsven the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week.  The Senior forward had four double-doubles this season.  Her best performance came in her first Big Five game against Villanova where van Grinsven scored a career-high 24 points.

LA SALLE 1 – 8 Overall, 0 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost vs. Albany 75 – 36

Summary –

Albany 75 LaSalle 36 – Ebonee Jones led LaSalle with 13 points, but the Explorers were routed by the defending America East champion Albany Great Danes.  The Explorers went 13 of 61 from the floor (21.3%), and committed 22 turnovers.  Leading scorer Brittany Wilson was held to 7 points.

Next Game – 12/16 vs. Florida at the Gola Arena

PENN – 4 – 3 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 61 – 60 vs. St. Francis NY, Won 54 – 40 at LIU Brooklyn

Summary –

Penn 61 St. Francis (NY) 60 – The Red and Blue overcame a 18-point second half deficit when Alyssa Baron made a layup with 6.4 seconds to play giving Penn the win.  The Quakers finished the game on a 22 – 3 run and scored the last 12 of the game.  Kathleen Roche scored 20 points, Baron added 14.  It was the third straight win for Penn.

Penn 54 LIU Brooklyn 40 – The Red and Blue lost its first three games of the season.  They have won the last four games earning a 54 – 40 win at LIU Brooklyn.  Alyssa Baron scored a game-high 17 points.  The Red and Blue made nine three-pointers, and shot 33.3% for the game compared to 28.1% for LIU.  Kara Bonenberger added 12 points.  The Quakers forced 18 LIU turnovers which gave them a 12 – 2 edge in points off turnovers.

Next Game – 12/21 at Drexel in the Battle of 33rd Street

SAINT JOSEPH’S 5 – 3 Overall, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 69 – 43 vs. Lafayette, Lost 55 – 51 vs. Villanova

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 69 Lafayette 43 – Forward Chatilla van Grinsven recorded her third double-double of the season scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.  The Hawks started the second half by going on a 21 – 2 run taking a 51 – 24 lead with 11:47 to play.  Erin Shields added 10 points for Saint Joe’s.

Villanova 55 Saint Joseph’s 51 – The Hawks got a career-high 24 points from Chatilla van Grinsven, who also recorded a double-double adding 11 rebounds, but fell to Villanova in their Big Five opener.  The Hawks fought back to tie the game at 38 with 8:58 to play.  The Wildcats answered with a 10 – 0 run that proved to be the difference.   Natasha Cloud had four assists, six rebounds, and two steals in addition to six points.

Chatilla van Grinsven was named Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week.

Next Game – 12/20 vs. Central Michigan in the Gator Classic

TEMPLE 5 – 3 Overall

Results – Lost 71 – 62 at Kent State

Summary –

Kent State 71 Temple 62 – The Owls held an 11-point lead in the second half, but Kent took a 57 – 55 lead in the last three minutes.  The Golden Flashes held the lead for the rest of the game.  Kent State had a 24 – 7 edge in made free throws.  The Owls committed 19 turnovers that led to 28 Kent State points, 10 more than Temple.  Victoria Macaulay recorded a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds.  Tyonna Williams contributed 14 points.

Next Game – 12/16 at Auburn

VILLANOVA 7 – 1 Overall, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 55 – 51 at Saint Joseph’s

Summary –

Villanova 55 Saint Joseph’s 51 – The Wildcats used a 10 – 0 run late to take a 48 – 38 lead in earning their second Big Five win of the season.  Villanova lost leading scorer Laura Sweeney early in the game with a eye injury.  It was up to the other veteran players to step up, and they did.  Rachel Roberts scored 16 points and added 9 rebounds.  Megan Pearson had 11 points.  Devon Kane scored 10 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

Next Game – 12/12 vs. Princeton at the Pavilion

DREXEL 6 – 2 Overall

Results – Did not play this week

Summary –

Next Game – 12/21 vs. Penn at The DAC in the Battle of 33rd Street
