PhillyCollegeSports.com Players of the Week – Khalif Wyatt, TempleThe senior guard for Temple showed his best against nationally ranked VCU (#21/19) on national television scoring a game-high 30 points against the frenetic VCU defense (known as havoc) to key the victory for the Cherry and White.  In the game against Fordham Wyatt registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Week of March 4 – March 10, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 21 – 8 Overall, 15 – 4 Atlantic 10, 3 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 84 – 70 vs. George Washington at the Gola Arena, Lost 78 – 54 at Saint Louis

Summary –

LaSalle 84 George Washington 70 – The Explorers clinched a first round bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament by virtue of the win over the Colonials.  LaSalle buried GW from the 3-Point line making 12 of 22 while holding GW to just 1.  The Colonials outrebounded the Explorers 28 – 19 and commanded the paint area.  But the LaSalle guards carried the day.  Senior Ramon Galloway led all scorers with 29 points making 4 of 7 from distance.  Junior Tyreek Duren scored 19 points and Tyrone Garland had 12.

Saint Louis 78 LaSalle 54 – The Explorers played even against the Billikens in the first half.  In the second half Saint Louis broke the game open making 17 of the first 20 shots.  Rob Loe scored a game-high 20 points.  Tyrone Garland paced LaSalle with 15 points.  Tyreek Duren scored 12 and Sam Mills had 12 points.

Next Game – #4 Seed Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal 3/15 vs. Butler Dayton winner.

PENN – 9 – 21 Overall, 6 – 7 Ivy League, 0 – 4 Big Five

Results – Won 66 – 64 at Brown, Lost 79 – 65 at Yale

Summary –

Penn 66 Brown 64 – Miles Cartwright scored the final 8 points for the Red and Blue erasing a 64 – 58 lead for Brown in the final two minutes.  The junior guard scored 17 points in the game, 15 of the final 17 points for the team.  Guard Patrick Lucas-Perry added 15 for Penn.

Yale 79 Penn 65 – At halftime the Red and Blue led by one-point.  With 12 minutes to play the Bulldogs held a double-digit lead at 54 – 44.  The spread lasted until the final horn sounded.  Freshman guard Tony Hicks led the Quakers with 16 points.  Miles Cartwright scored 12 and freshman Darien Nelson-Henry contributed 10 points.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 17 – 12 Overall, 8 – 8 Atlantic 10, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 81 – 44 vs. Rhode Island at the Hagan Arena, Lost 52 – 40 at Charlotte

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 81 Rhode Island 44 – The Hawks raced out to a 39 – 20 halftime lead in breezing to a win on Senior Night on Hawk Hill.  Lone senior Carl Jones scored 10 points giving him 1,776 career points and fourth place in school history.  Junior center C.J. Aiken returned from an injury to score 15 points in the game.  Forward Ronald Roberts registered his 13th double-double of the season scoring 13 points and taking down 11 rebounds.

Charlotte 52 Saint Joseph’s 40 – Poor shooting doomed the Hawks as they made just 29.2% of their field goal attempts, and 13.6% from 3-Point land.  SJU went without a field goal for the last 8:23 of the game.  Langston Galloway was the only Hawks players in double figures with 13 points, 10 prior to halftime.  It was Saint Joe’s lowest point total since a 56 – 39 loss at Villanova on February 6, 2007.

TEMPLE 23 – 8 Overall, 11 – 5 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 74 – 55 at Fordham, Won 84 – 76 vs. #21/19 VCU at the Liacouris Center

Summary –

Temple 74 Fordham 55 – By winning at Rose Hill Temple continues their six game winning streak, and put themselves in a position to capture a first-round bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament.  The Owls started slow, but a 22 – 5 run gave them a 28 – 17 halftime lead.  The lead stretched to 20 points.  Fordham got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.  Senior guard Khalif Wyatt and sophomore center Anthony Lee registered double-doubles.  Wyatt had 19 and 11 while Lee contributed 12 and 10.  Forward Scootie Randall scored 14 points, and Jake O’Brien had 10 to round out the double figures scorers for the Owls.

Temple 84 #21/19 VCU 76 – With the win the Owls secure the #3 Seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and get a first round bye.  Temple overcame a 16-point deficit at the 6 minute mark of the first half.  In the second half the Cherry and White scored 17 of the first 21 points to take a 53 – 48 lead.  Temple took off from there getting consecutive three’s from Khalif Wyatt and Scootie Randall to move in front by a 68 – 56 score with 6:34 on the clock.  The lead would grow to 78 – 61 behind an 8 – 0 run by the Owls.  Khalif Wyatt scored a game-high 30 points.  Forward Jake O’Brien added 19 points and Scootie Randall had 13.

Next Game – 3/15/2013 Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal – #3 Seed Temple vs. Winner of UMass / GW game Liacouris Center

VILLANOVA 19 – 12 Overall, 10 – 8 Big East, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 67 – 57 vs. Georgetown at the Wells Fargo Center

Next Game – #7 Seen Big East Quarterfinal vs. 10th Seed St. John’s

DREXEL 13 – 18, Overall, 9 – 9 CAA

Results – Lost 60 – 54 to George Mason in the CAA Tournament Opening Round

Summary –

George Mason 60 Drexel 54 – The Dragons rallied from 15 points down, but could not get the lead as they fall to the Patriots in the opening round of the CAA Tournament.  Frantz Massenat led Drexel with 20 points and Damion Lee added 11.  The Dragons won the battle of the boards 33 – 28 with forward Daryl McCoy leading the way with 12 rebounds.  However, Drexel committed 17 turnovers that led to 21 Mason points.
