Drexel Wins CAA Tournament, Penn Wins The Ivy League Title, West Philadelphia Heading to the NCAA Tournament

Tal Bublil Named CAA Most Outstanding Performer

Week of November 12 – November 19, 2013 Games

DREXEL 9 – 7 – 4 Overall, 4 – 1 – 2 CAA

Results – Tied 2 – 2 vs. Delaware Won 7 – 6 on Penalty Kicks, Won 1 – 0 vs. #21 William & Mary

Drexel 2 Delaware 2 – Drexel 7 – 6 on Penalty Kicks – The Dragons took a 2 – 0 lead in the first half on goals by Joaquin del Rosario.  The lead did not last as Delaware scored in the 66th and the 85th minute to tie the game.  Guillermo Delgado got the game tying goal at the 84:27 mark.  The Blue Hens outshot the Dragons 22 – 12, but goal keeper Tyler Afflerbach made 7 saves.  In the penalty kick phase Afflerbach made 3 saves.  The Dragons got goals from John Grosh, Nathan Page, Michele Pataia, Jared Girard, Robert Liberatore, Joaquin Rosario, Tal Bublil, and the eventual winner by Felipe Fagundes.  Now it is on the title game for the Dragons.

Drexel 1 #21 William & Mary 0 – CAA Championship Game – Drexel returns to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year as the top-seeded Dragons defeated William & Mary 1 – 0 at Vidas Field.  It was the first time that the Tribe had been shutout since September 13.  Freshman defender Jameson Detweiler scored his first collegiate goal that was the title game-winner for Drexel.  Senior defender Tal Bublil was named the tournament Most Outstanding Performer.  Tyler Afflerbach, Ken Tribbett,  and Joaquin del Rosario were named to the All-Championships Team.

LA SALLE 8 – 8 – 4 Overall, 5 – 2 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 1 – 1 Won 3 – 2 on Penalty Kicks, Lost 2 – 1 vs. Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Tournament

Summary –

La Salle 1 Dayton 1 – The Explorers moved on to the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament after tying Dayton and winning 3 – 2 on penalty kicks.  La Salle got their goal early in the game as Jason Plumhoff scored in the 14th minute.  The Flyers answered in the 33rd minute on a goal by Greg Enstone.  For the game McCarthy registered 12 saves facing 31 shots.  In the penalty kick phase Plumhoff, Joe Farrell, and Matt Robinson scored for La Salle.  Explorer goal keeper John McCarthy stopped two of four Flyer attempts.

Saint Louis 2 La Salle 1 – The season ended for the Explorers as they fell to the top seeded Saint Louis Billikens in the Atlantic 10 Tournament second round.  La Salle trained 2 – 0.  In the 55th minute Pat Sullivan scored off an assist by Jason Plumhoff bender that was headed into the net.  Goal keeper John McCarthy made 6 saves facing 16 shots.  During the game McCarthy became the all-time leader in saves at the school.

PENN – 8 – 8 – 1 Overall, 5 – 1 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsWon 2 – 0 at Harvard

Summary –

Penn 2 Harvard 0 – To win the Ivy League championship Penn needed to defeat Harvard in Boston.  The Red and Blue got two goals before the match was 12 minutes old.  It was the 8th Ivy title for the Quakers.  Nicky Lin scored first for Penn.  Duke Lacroix scored unassisted on a kick that got past the right post.  Harvard has a chance late but a penalty kick by Kevin Harrington hit the post as time ran out.  Penn goal keeper Max Polkinhorne made 4 saves facing 15 Crimson shots.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 5 – 8 – 6 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 0 – 0 vs. George Mason, Lost on Penalty Kicks in Atlantic 10 Tournament

Summary –

George Mason 0 Saint Joseph’s 0 –Penalty Kicks GMU 4 SJU 2 – The teams played 110 minutes without a goal.  Late in the overtime George Mason had a golden opportunity to score but Brendan Reilly kept the ball out of the net sending the game to penalty kicks.  The shots were tied at 15 each, and George Mason had an 11 – 3 edge in corner kicks.  Andrew D’Ottavi had 4 saves for the Hawks with Reilly recording a team save.  In the penalty kick phase Saint Joseph’s got goals from Jake Nelson and Tim Lazorko.  Brendan and Jimmy Reilly were turned away.  George Mason was a perfect four for four on their penalty kicks.
